The small linux problem thread

Why?

its part of FHS which is required for systemd. /bin just symlinks to /usr/bin. which is defaulting to /bin instead of /usr/bin because /bin is searched first from the PATH variable

/bin and /usr/bin predate systemd.

FHS you linked shows the purpose of each. The reason yum is in both will be because /bin will symlink to /usr/bin. Some distros donā€™t bother with the separation of defining commands needed for single user mode only and all other commands.

edit: Fedora, CentOS etc. dont bother with this distinction. No idea on other distros.

Totally forgot about that, thanks.

Ubuntu does not symlink /bin and /sbin

Internet says the file size limit is mainly down to filesystem support. It probably copies in chunks, but it basically has zero documentation unless you read the source yourself.

Iā€™ve copied 500GB files over SCP to ext4. Probably a FS limitation.

Sweet. When I get the chance Iā€™ll try to find the open source GNU scp and decipher this. Iā€™ll post it back here once I figure it out.

Thanks for the 411

For the past couple of days, Iā€™ve been noticing some issues with Fedora 27 staying asleep on my ASUS ZenBook 3 Deluxe UX490UA when Iā€™ve got the lid closed.

I know itā€™s gone into sleep mode, but it seems it doesnā€™t stay that way or continuously awakens. I find the battery drained down (roughly half way or so) after having it unplugged from a full charge and when placed in the carrying case for several hours.

What can I do to remedy this?

Does your device have orientation sensors? Iā€™ve found that with my laptop (a 2-in-1 Inspiron), significant changes in orientation or rapid movement will awaken the sleeping bear. (Using F27.) If so, try turning rotation lock on and see if it changes anything, it did for me. If not, it may be something else.

Anyone had stability issues with kernel 4.14 and 4.15 (not sure about earlier) with Ryzen 1600? getting lots of random crashing even with C6 disabled.

No, I donā€™t believe it has orientation sensors. (Iā€™m assuming this is common on the 2-in-1 laptops, which mine isnā€™t.)

So for the last 3 or so weeks, my realtek 8289 onboard NIC stopped working. The problem started once I added two SSDs to my system. Since then, the NIC is not recognized by Debian SID or by Arch Linux. Weird thing is that when I take the SSDs out, there is no difference in functionality.

I will create another thread if need be to detail what I have done (a lot) but my real question, is, have you ever had hardware like a NIC just cease to function and not come back online under GNU/Linux?

For specifications, I am running a ASUS Sabertooth 990FX r2.0.

Chrome has been giving me sync issues all day in Solus.

Does anyone else have this problem? I can sign in, but I have to do it every time I open Chrome.

I am having a issue where my main antergos wonā€™t boot to the start screen luckily I am able to go to a fallback to continue temporary use.
checking the journal with this

 sudo journalctl -b -1 -r

gives me this.

this reoccurring issue is showing up every time I look at the long

Feb 21 11:26:20 ThinkParch-E570 systemd-udevd[224]: worker [231] failed while handling '/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1c.0/0000:01:00.0'

Feb 21 11:26:20 ThinkParch-E570 kernel: RIP: nvGetClocks+0x74/0x260 [nvidiafb] RSP: ffffb418c1e53798

I am really paranoid about updating the system because an update might mess up the fallback I am currently using

I remember seeing someone mention something about nvidia screwing with drivers, but I donā€™t remember setting nvidia as my main display

Does the issue go away when you add nomodeset to the kernel arguments?

how do I change that?

should be able to press e at the grub menu and add nomodeset to the end of the line that begins with linux or linuxefi

Im stuck, I can boot into the fallback and LTS fallback, but im not sure what I should do, I was thinking of removing novearu, but I am afraid of breaking it further

as mentioned here
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=234646

You canā€™t remove nouveau (itā€™s built into the kernel). You can, however, blacklist nouveau in /etc/modprobe.d.

If you havenā€™t already looked at this page, it may be of help to you:

Having a minor issue with my Ubuntu system.

Only works if I start in recovery mode, drop to a terminal and execute mount /dev/sdb2 / -oremount,rw then continue booting.

Iā€™m fairly certain this is the culprit:

Using BTRFS root.

Update: Fixed it.

I had converted my ext4 partition to btrfs, and left in the errors=remount-ro flag in /etc/fstab. Works just fine now.
