The new UK law that might be implemented meaning we all get spied on

Just Read all of this... "The Tories are planning to change our 'tolerant society'
Obeying the law will no longer be enough to guarantee you are able to live peacefully in the UK without harassment from the state.

David Cameron is set to announce a string of new powers that are seen by many as a challenge to our basic civil liberties.

This sentence from the Tory leader is particularly chilling:

"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone'."
MirrorA brighter, more secure future?
What does this mean?
Well, in simple terms: obeying the law will no longer be enough to be enough to ensure you escape retribution by the authorities.

Even if you are not suspected of committing any crime, you could be hit by orders preventing you from speaking in public or associating with specific people.

The planned "snooper's charter" will give the police the right to read your private messages, even if you're not suspected of any wrongdoing. Now, it seems that if they see anything they don't like (even if it isn't criminal) they won't be obliged to leave you alone.

We know that the Tory government are also planning to scrap the current Human Rights Act and replace it with one that would introduce a "threshold below which Convention [human] rights will not be engaged" - allowing UK courts to strike out certain cases.

This could leave you with no legal recourse to challenge any controls you are subject to.

It's all a bit...
No longer a cliche, more a fact of life
Why is David Cameron doing this?
He wants to preemptively combat extremism and terrorism. But we already have a number of laws which allow police and counter-terrorism officers to monitor and arrest anybody suspected of being involved in terrorism, or in planning a terrorist attack.

Although these fundamental changes are being brought in under the guise of combating terrorism, this isn't the limit of their application.

These new changes have the potential to be used against all of us."
Would just like everyones opinion on it no matter if you are from the UK or not, and some very strong well worded argument against this piece of shit, as i know some people who could help stop this so please can we all put together a big list of arguments against this
thanks
happy ranting (btw im mad about this like really MAD haha)
Jonathan :/

I think this topic came up last week.

I'm totally against it and think that it's only further turning the UK into a 'Nanny State', where we are controlled in a manner not to dissimilar to that of certain other international leaderships we have overthrown / condemned ourselves.

As you've pointed out, it's under a guise of terrorism prevention and innocent people will have their privacy destroyed.

What can we do about it? As you are hopefully somewhat savvy with technology, you can only encourage people to protect themselves best they can (VPN's and the like). Complaining wont do anything, fight fire with fire.

Well with the way GCHQ has been working with NSA and doing as they do (along with other members of the Five Eyes), there's not much more you should be expecting as what's happening to you guys is the same thing happening in America (and other places) in terms of mass spying and rights and things being slowly stripped away. It's a matter of control.

The topic probably did come up last week, i probably missed as ive been really busy with revisiong for my exams.
But could you give me some really strong points and counter arguments that would go to a MP lets say? would really appreciate it as im awful at arguing haha
thanks
Jonny

I know, used think i was lucky living in the uk with non of whats going on in the usa happening here, but what ive just read infuriates me haha how they will just take that right away from us even though the current method is working great.

You could make a comparison with how with recent events with policy, war, spying, etc have been nearly mimicking that of USA and go down that road with saying how things will end up if it continues etc.

I'm not the best at counter arguments either, but be sure that if you do face a public speaker or even speak to a small group to be sure to study the topic very well and be able to be specific, etc

Alright thanks :D

It isn't mimicking, it's cooperating.

Iraq and Afghanistan wars didn't "mimic" the US, they cooperated with them.

GCHQ doesn't "gimmick" the US, they cooperate with them. Instead of mass spying they tap under sea cables and do more precise survillence and policies such as 'trolling' online activists and taking out DDOS attacks.

Perhaps mimicking wasn't the right description, its hard to argue against the fact that outcomes of various situations have been similar so that was the angle I was trying to portray with my comparison

I though you were @boov for a minute there haha

:o

Whoops, well that was an unintended near impersonation haha

Yeah, you might want to see if you can get your username changed in case you get a slapping :P

where did you get your name from??? haha.

There's a funny story behind it that made the word and then I started using it as a name in some places haha. If you'd like you can PM me and we can arrange for me to get a name change? This was quite unintended to get such a similar name
