The Man-Flat (... a less epic Man-Cave (for now)!?)

I recently moved house, and I thought I should log my progress setting up shop. Kinda like @smogsy did in his very epic man-cave log (https://forum.level1techs.com/t/the-man-cave/).

Hopefully this helps me keep on track and getting things done... and not waste all my time with whisky and beer on the couch (or on the internet, if it would work...), while waiting for it to finish it by itself.

~ the status quo

the man cave / battlestation

the lounge / living room

~ the plan

(... for now)

The first thing I really need to do is gettin some sort of curtains. Hopefully they help killing some of the reverb I have in the rooms, as they are rather empty, esp. the walls. And maybe later add some acoustic elements / foam.
The battlestation has the worst reverb at the moment. I just switched from a ModMic to a shotgun mic, and it is very noticeable there.

The second thing on my list is to build a backwall with LED lighting (strips) for the expedit/kallax shelves in the living room. I planned to put my single malt collection in those shelves. But I dont know yet what kind of LED strips to get, and if I should use a wifi/bluetooth/regular controller for them. If someone has a recommendation, that would be helpful. (should be available in the EU/GER)

Further down the road are a new TV, not that i really use this one very often. Maybe a bit more ambient lighting. Something to hang on all those damned walls. More shelves to store the mess in the BS-room. Maybe built a nice HTPC, but then there is the mostly unused PS3 that was bought once upon a time to be a blueray player...

~ the tasks

  • get some curtains
  • buy LED strips and controllers
  • build "backlight-boxes" for the expedits
  • ...
  • ...
  • buy new TV with inbuilt S2 reciever
  • (bonus) practice ze rusty engrish

Looks like some one was watching Robo Cop? Or was that some other movie with Red Forman? :D

some phillips hue stuff would probably look cool

I'm jealous of how bright it is.

I'm practically in a cave by comparison.

Rambo III was on TV

white walls + pictures taken with a flash :]
but yeah ... I dont understand why people would paint their walls with dark colours, makes everything feel smaller

will probabbly happen down the road, but not from phillips. i think the hue stuff is just too overpriced

I got some LED RGB light strips to stick to the back of my TV that would work great anywhere. I believe you can keep chaining them together. BUT don't put the receiver for these near the infrared TV receiver or your TV remote will screw with the LED settings...

While hue is overpriced amazon echo support makes it nice, but it will all drop in cost over time.

I will probbably try one of those for controlling the lights:

WS2812s and arduinos / esp8266. trust me.

Seems like a bit overkill for lighting the shelves... but I'll try to keep that in mind should I RGB the rest of all the things around my flat.

Also managed to start building the backlight boxes:
