With the soon to be released movie The Hobbit I suggest reading the book. If you have already now would be a good time to read it again. I love reading a book just before the movie comes out so I can see how close they were able to keep the story line.
I feel it's gonna be hard even in a (possibly) 4 hour movie, they will have to let some parts out. Tolkien all in all is hard to put into a movie with his special stile of writing, i love it tho...wont have time to finish it until the movie comes out, so i'd rather not start again. ^^
The Hobbit is one of my favorite books. It's freaking hilarious at times. I liked Felloship of the Ring but really didn't like the rest of The Lord of The Rings. I usually prefer books like A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin, but The Hobbit is a really fun read.
Not one 4 hour movie, possibly three 4 hour movies... Can't decide how I feel about that.

Also, I'm a massive Tolkien fan, but does anyone else think what we've seen of the dwarves seem a bit caricatured?
Loved the Hobbit as a child and watching the original cartoon version of the LOTR, the movies were really well done IMO, hopefully this will be done well too.
Apart from the obvious cash-in aspect of having three movies, I think it will allow for a lot of detail to be put in. Looking forward to this.
From the trailers I think the Dwarves look a bit slapstick. I hope that turns out to be a wrong impression
The Hobbit has always been my favorite book of his, but untill recently I've always had a bit of a hard time enjoying most of the LoTR as well.
Reading them now, however, being a little older than I was the first time, I absolutely love them. I realized that I'm much more fascinated by the extensive lore and constant references to historical events and places. Theres really such a feeling of ancient history that I couldn't appreciate in my high school years.
I think Peter Jackson is making 2 or 3 movies for it.
Re-read the Hobbit, damn it has been some years.. What a fun read. I agree that the Dwarves seem a bit too cartoonistic. They look too much like a hobbit with long beards to me. There is much room for failure with this book however, I couldn't think of a better producer to take on the task.
I'd have to agree that the Fellowship of the Rings was tremendously uplifting and a very entertaining book. Two Towers and Return of the King, in my opinion, could have been condensed to one book. I liked reading the history of how everything came to be in: The Silmarillion. Damn fine work though, some of it had to be completed by his son.
Ah someone else who knows about the animated movie. I saw it in the theatre when it first came out and now have it on a VHS tape. They never did finish it. It ended with the final battle at Helms Deep I believe.
