The great apple heresy build/unholy resurrection

I'm going to be updating this over the next few weeks until completion. The original computer is an Apple G4 from around 2000 and was being used as an audio production computer until a few years ago when it finally died. I recently acquired and finally stripped it today.

Best of luck!

What are your plans/hopes for it?

its after 10 here now but tomorrow im going to do some dremmeling to get rid of the old stand offs and figure out exactly where the new ones will be mounted. at the moment i have a 970mobo and 6350 just collecting dust so at first its just going to be a general use machine and something to mess around with. outwardly it will look exactly the same though with the exception of the io ports. if i had a mini itx board i could cut out the old io section since its actually part of the hinged door but right now im leaning more toward putting the board closer to center and running the cables through the old io and hooking to the mobo inside the case. the case is overbuilt as hell though. the whole thing is steel and almost everything is screws except for a few choice things that are either part of the chassis or basically spot welded in place. i love the reverse delorien door though.

todays update so far. ground down original mobo standoffs and am preparing to drill holes for new stand offs in horizontal atx config.

must be purified!

aint that the truth. the whole cases is steel and my cheap bits arent enjoying it.

Apple fans will cry when they see it done. I may flip the logos upside down when I put the sides back on but my OCD would never permit that lmao

the old drive tray is going to give me some trouble so i guess its time to do some more "trimming" new standoffs are spot on though except on but thats not a big deal.

got the issue with the standoffs sorted, now the painting

This is sweet! cant wait to see more updates.

now its time to solder wires for a new front panel switch solution. heres where im at so far

and dont worry about the powersupply fan, theres actually a duct behind it that the 120mmfan also draws from. quite ingenious to be honest even though it pains me slightly to give even 15 year old apple products credit of any type

Looking good. Can't wait to see the next set of pics.

till i can either order or make some cable extensions and get the new front panel switches soldered up this is the last one likely for the day.

They were actually designed though for airflow. I remember the old videos for the G5's and they were good pieces of kit. Airflow was planned and because of that it could run pretty quiet. In comparison PC's are still way behind and just a mishmash individual items. They are far more effective and powerful items than they used to be but none the less the airflow throughout the case is more a case of luck.

My Fractal Design R5 isn't that much different from the last PC I built about 10 years ago. Only thing that's really moved in the design is the powersupply is at the bottom rather than the top. Motherboard, disk holders still in same place, just a couple more quiet fans really.

Great project in any case (pun sort of unintentional)...

the case aside from being tough as a tank material wise was definitely built to run quiet and cool. even now that the drive tray/middle case support is gone its still more rigid than most other cases ive dealt with. while not operational the computer could still power up when i got it and was whisper quiet even though the fan was attached via molex and blowing at full capacity. and now that all the old hardware is out its quite roomy inside

This is the part of the video I remember. Actually looks engineered to cope with heat effectively..

Had the latest 120nm tech on the main chip. Haha, that seems huge now :o)

thats a huge departure from the g4 which is what i have. hardware aside for the g4 the mobo was on the door like i have mine set up. the g4 also has a single powerpc chip that is passively cooled and this one at least was rocking a whopping 640mb of ram when you count the two add in sticks that has been put in over the years. the part that shocks me is that this was a daily work computer until a few short years ago when something went out on it and they just decided to get a new computer

extending the 24pin and supp 8 pin connections now. im hoping to be able to do a test boot off of usb tonight but im already way ahead of schedule. and yes il tidy the rat nest up after i know my connections are all solid
