The Emulator

So, I want to build a PC that I can emulate everything upto the Wii.
I want it pretty cheap and I have a few parts I can get cheap.

What I have

  • Gt640
  • I7 (not sure model number. From a dell laptop)
  • 8GB of ram (From same laptop)

What I can get cheap (Second hand)

  • AMD 3200+ Athlon - $25
  • 1GB DDR3 sticks for ~$5
  • 2GB DDR3 sticks for ~$12

I highly doubt the laptop hardware will be useful but idk.
Give me suggestions, I'm planning to set this up as a sudo-console

I emulated PS2 games with a Core i7-3610qm and GTX 675m just fine, the GPU was barely being utilized so the GT 640 should/could work. I also had 8GB of ram at the time and it was fine. I'm not sure about Wii emulation though, never done that before. What i7 do you have?

You just want something with really fast per core performance, so maybeee like a G3258, although for other uses it might end up being a bit limited as a dual core

Although I emulated like kingdom hearts and Budokai 3, and double dash fine on my 750K

The laptop is dead and I don't have it handy so I'm not exactly sure
I think it's third gen... it's from a HP pavilion so googling it may find it.

It's only being used for emulating and playing games so that should be fine. I'd just prefer to play really cheaply. Perhaps I can get my i7 running on a desktop socket. Idk if it's any different

It is different, although there are some mobile socket ITX boards, just hard to find and probably expensive(I know Kontron and SuperMicro made some at one point, although they were pricey then).

well a G3258 is like 50 bucks so

$100 over here but still not bad.

My mobile CPU may be a: i7-2720QM but I'm not entirely sure

that's probably your cheapest option unless like an A4 6300 is cheaper, which is like a 4ghz FM2+ dual core CPU

or any of the FM2+ dual cores really I could get an A6 5400k sometimes for 30 bucks here, but ya the intel part is going to have higher performance overall

That's around $40-70 over here

A4 7300 60 bucks

G3258 100 bucks

Ya, maybe the A4 would work, though still emulators really like fast per core performance, though you can OC the K series part

Might be worth spending the extra 20 bucks for twice the RAM

Great, now down to the case. I'd like something slim and small that would look at home in a lounge room but not over priced

I'm looking at:

My current sertup

I have a power supply, and I may be able to utilize the dead laptops 500gb HDD til I fill it.
I also have 2tb external storage and may have some spared HDDs and Cases from my father.

Could always just throw it into the shipping box

I'm tempted...

Dolphin emulator is indeed on of the application, that realy need decent per core performance,
like @Streetguru allready mentioned above.
It does not realy run that well on a AMD (FX) cpu, as far as my personal experiance goes.
I would recommend something like a Pentium G, Core i3, if it has to be cheap.
But an i5 would be nice.

;__;
It was perfect for my budget.
y u ruin my dreams

I am not sure what to do...

Well what games were you going to run?

Mainly PS2, xbox, and PS1 games that I never got to play.
Maybe MonHunTri and other Wii games (Although I have it on my 3Ds)

well, I'll download brawl and see if my 5800K can emulate it, same CPU anyways, I think it worked fine before, though I'll post tomorrow

although from the benchmark site

"CPU: AMD "Kaveri" A10-7850K @ 3.7GHz (OC 4.5GHz)

OS: Windows 8.1

Time: 11 minutes 31 seconds"

Not too bad I don't think, only a bit slower than some of the i5 results

I actually planned to do this exact same thing not too long ago but put the money into my main rig instead lol. I was gonna go with a mini-ITX build, G3258 with a 750ti running Windows 7. Mostly just wanted to play all my PS1, PS2, Dreamcast and N64 favorites.
