The choice of motherboards

Hey guys! thanks for taking the time to help me out :)

So as said in the title i have a choice of 4 motherboards for my price range. They are:

ROG Maximus VI Hero

ROG Maximus VI Gene

ROG Maximus VII Ranger

ASUS Sabertooth Mark 2

In the country that i live in the Gene and Hero are the same price. The Ranger is Quite a bit cheaper than Gene and Hero while the Sabertooth is around the same price as the Gene and Hero as well.

So which one should i go for?? i was thinking to go for the Ranger since it is the most up to date Motherboard out of the selection (and that its ROG :3)

I am planning on pairing it with an Intel Core i5-4690K.

Thanks for your help! :)

Maximus VI Gene/Hero are Z87 boards. If you are spending that kind of money on a motherboard, you'll probably want to go with the newest and therefore most future-proof chipset, which is Z97. That leaves you with the Ranger and the Sabertooth.

All the higher-end ASUS boards have an 8-phase CPU power delivery, so in terms of overclocking you'll be fine with both. The Ranger has an M.2 slot and a higher quality Audio solution onbaord. If that's not crucial to you, go with the cheaper Sabertooth.

yeah i would go with a Z97 board indeed. The Maximus VII Hero is offcourse a nice board.

The Ranger is nice aswell, however its not a 8 phase board. its 4 pwm phase board (8 marketing phases). But still this is basicly totaly fine for overclocking. Because wenn it comes to overclocking on haswell, you just need to be lucky with the cpu, voltage regulation is inside the chip aswell. So yeah its still a matter of sillicon lottery.

Basicly any Z97 board with a 4 pwm powerphase or better will overclock totaly fine.

It has 8 physical phases, but only 4 controllers for them. So yeah, but it's going to overclock well anyways.

do you have the msi gaming series in your country they are good too. also the z97 mpower and Z97X-SOC FORCE is good too.

Even a midrange z97 will get the most out of your haswell cpu (overclock wise). Will just be minus a few bells and whistles. ~ midrange cheaper board + 8 thread i7/xeon probably for the same money.

I personally really like the z97 Ranger though out of your list - sure is a visual treat with that colour scheme.

Yeah i think i might go with the Ranger. I did have an ASRock Z97X Killer in mind but since the shop didnt have it i gave a list of that the did have haha. I havent checked the other shops if they have the Ranger, do you think i should? would it be worth it.

these 2 boards are in my price range, the ASRock being a bit cheaper that the Ranger. obviously.

yea it would go with the colour scheme of everything. ROG Ranger and a ROG GTX 760 Striker :)

Ranger is a very nice board imo. intel lan, which i personaly prefer over killer nik crap. and offcourse supreme fx audio feutures

What is an 8 phase board? i dont know to much on this sort of stuff but im learning along the way haha.

And the other thing is should i go for the i5 4690 or the over clocked version i5 4690k?
Apart from the price i dont really know any other benefits of having the 4690k apart from that it has a high overclocking capability. And form that i dont exactly know what the benefits of overcloking are

look at the comment i previously replied to you.

Well overclocking will offcourse improve performance. especialy minimum frame rates. So yeah going with an unlocked cpu is basicly better.

Not that the i5 is bad but that chip doesn't have hyper-threading
