Is this down to the new Radeon Pro drivers or whatever they're called? I've kind of wanted to test their performance under DCC apps under Linux.
Actually no. It's mainly the open amdgpu drivers. The pro still have features the open ones dont but the idea is to shits most if not all the functionality to the open ones for consumer cards.
Linux 4.8 and 4.9 are looking even better for that
Ah, right. I had big issues with AMD drivers on CentOS and Fedora. They refused to run any of my DCC apps. So I had to try and install the 'official' ones, it was a nightmare. But with nVidia, there just was a simple repo for it, kept it all update to date and off I went.
Depends when and what "official" ones it was. With the new structure, things should be a lot more seamless, theres still work to do, but the open amdgpu are official just as the pro ones. check out https://mesamatrix.net/ should give you an idea of the opengl features enabled on the mesa/amdgpu drivers.
Thank you. I will check it out when I'm back at my main machine. Because soon I need to upgrade my GPU, but I use both CentOS and Windows as much as each other. So if I could get away with a 480.. or even two of them, and have it work perfectly I'd be over the moon.
Only thing to keep an eye on CentOS is if its got the right updates. amdgpu is quite good on Linux 4.7 and newer mesa but early stages on anything before that.
