Tablet/Ipad for children?

Hey, I'm looking for a tablet or ipad that I can get for my 6 year old child. I'm not up to date on tablets, so I really have no idea what to look for. I was thinking of getting an Ipad Mini but not sure if there's a better one out there. I may also be using this tablet for myself, so something like a Nabi may not be best, just a normal tablet but good for kids. So any ideas on which tablet would be good? Sorry for the confusing question, don't know much about tablets.

Nexus 7 (2013). Its cheap as hell for its specs, 1920x1200 display screen which is so crisp, 2gb of ram so you won't have to worry about you running out of ram often, great for watching movies because of that awesome screen, great for web browsing. Basically everything is good aabout it except it would be better if they offered a higher than 32gb model. Micro SD cards slots suck and are so slow so I'm happy they don't have them on the tablet. Because the tablet will be for your kids 32gb should be plenty (around $269 USD).

If you want something a bit cheaper since its for your kids the Asus memo pad hd7 is also an option. Its about a hundred dollars less.

If you love apple (unlike me) the iPad mini retina display is the best rated apple tablet. I personally wouldn't get it for kids because apple tends to be "premium" products (said by other people, not me) and I would worry they would break that expensive tablet.

I would go with a cheap android tablet as it it gets broken it wont be a big loss.

I'm in the market too.  Got a cheap ~$80 android tablet that broke inside of 3 uses. Sent it back. I'm thinking nexus 7 with one hell-of-a rubber case around it.

I would recommend the first kindle fire. It's cheep and can be easily rooted which allows you to run stock android on it. That's what I did. One downside to this is that the specs are outdated so if you want something a little more modern maybe the 1st or 2nd gen nexus 7
