My VM server will occasionally boot up showing only 40gb ram installed (both in the BIOS and in OS) when I have 48gb (6*8gb Samsung EEC DDR3) This has happened on two differnet motherboards with the same RAM and CPU's (Dual X5645s) If I power cycle the issue will go away (works on both motherboards both X8DAH and SR-2) Any idea what's causing this? Memory controller on 1366 / 5520 is on CPUs FYI.
thanks :D
i know its basicly an older platform.
But did you check if there is a bios update for your mobo?

so after the Bios flashing .bat file completely failing for some reason and some extensive diagnostics it appears these CPU's may have bad 2-way QPI link. According to numerous post on EVGA forums even the latest BIOS (2013) still doesn't resolve the issue. Some were saying that the issue resulted from over-tightened heatsinks, but I doubt that as I loosened/tightened them to no avail. testing the CPU's individually showed the memory perfectly every time, but when I enabled both chips the issue persisted. I swapped the Dimms around thinking it was some issue with triple-channel operation which hasn't given me an errors yet. I'll have to keep testing and report back this weekend. Luckily the two chips were only $120 for the pair; still not cheap for me :/
Yeah probably some issues with memory detecting.
Somethimes a bios update if availeble could fix such things.
aaaand I edited my old post instead of making a new one; GG me
