I'm going to give Mint Cinnamon a go as have had it with Windows. But I need a program I can do writing on, specifically something intended for novel writing. Storybook seems to be what crops up when I look into this, can anyone confirm if this is any good or offer a better suggestion? Thanks.
http://gottcode.org/focuswriter/ Seems pretty nifty, and it got mention on LifeHacker for being good.
I Google'd your question and found this article: www.makeuseof.com/tag/for-literary-penguins-4-great-writing-tools-for-linux/
Plume Creator seems pretty neat. Some people on AskUbuntu suggested LibreOffice Writer but that is basically like Microsoft Word.
This could be something you would like
I didn't think Scrivener worked? Interesting :-)
Thanks folks. The Syndicate is always so ready to help noobs like myself. Very grateful.
For writing a novel, or any important text document for that matter, i would suggest Latex. It takes a bit getting used to but after that you will pretty much wont want anything else. I am currently using Tex Studio for my compiler. This software also has the advantage of being Linux native so no messing with WINE.
Thanks :-)
I agree with Rugaliz, Tex Studio is a fantastic complier for Latex. I used it last year for my Uni thesis and I could not have been happier with it.
@adrianwarner Hey mate,
When you say writing to you mean publishing, have you seen Scribus ?
it is a desktop publishing program
http://www.scribus.net/category/made-with-scribus/
here is a free tute/manual
http://en.flossmanuals.net/scribus-2/
and their wiki
http://wiki.scribus.net/canvas/Scribus
and if you are think about making custom fonts you should look into inkscape.
calibre can also be used to turn you text into books. https://calibre-ebook.com/
Are you familar with LaTex ? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LaTeX
and As noted above try Tex Studio or Tex Maker
http://www.xm1math.net/texmaker/
http://www.texstudio.org/
see which one you like more. They should be easy to install on any distro
Or do you mean word processing ?
In which case you must have seen libre office.
I do all writing in LaTeX. It's great for books and scientific papers. It also has the advantage that you can put your book under source control.
I use texmaker as my editor, but you can use any editor of course.
