Surprised with Emby - after 1 year trial of Plex (on TrueNAS)

Have you tried a container such as docker?

I cant say that i have tried, elderly… more retirement age.
She can sorta navigate, however has more of a grasp on netflix. She isn’t too good with ‘tech’ as it is as I have been the tech guy for her for the last 14 years… The kids mostly will just do it.
With anything remote I always run the vpn from the device, I dont use the remote functionality within the program. So i am sorta accessing Plex as a ‘direct’ user as I did not have the Plex sub for a fair while (i eventually wanted the unlocked transcoding features hence the purchase). I did many years with the free version that worked fine for me

I have tried truenas scale/containers,but not in relation to Jellyfin - syncthing seemed more complicated. I do plan to get more docker experience as time goes by, but TrueNAS core is all I mostly need these days.

I have tried all three of them, Plex, Emby and Jellyfin.

Plex is so overrated, over engineered and restrictive.

Emby is pretty good but it’s not just all roses, it got some niggles here and there. For example, the TV-handling is very shitty.

Jellyfin feels like a hobby project, they took Emby and gutted it to a shell of what it was.
Too many missing features compared to the others. It feels way too unfinished, a proof of concept thrown together in a hurry. If you have tried Emby before you will feel like you are crippled all the time.

So none of them? Got a suggestion?

Or separate out apps for different services?

as someone that started with plex, moved to emby, and dabbled with jellyfin. im still a emby user. i had issues even getting plex installed, then all of the ‘must be online’ stuff was another thorn. i ran a plex server and an emby server for a few months just to see if maybe my family preferred one over the other. honestly it was awash to them, and the beginning frustrations of plex had soured me. the one thing i found better about plex, it seems to do a slightly better job of initial scraping of movie names.

jellyfin is fairly comparable now but there is no real reason for me to move from emby to jellyfin. it does basically everything fine and looks fine. if i were doing a new build today, the debate would be Emby vs Jellyfin, as it is now safe to ignore Plex entirely.

That’s a really helpful perspective, I’m certainly in agreement :+1:

That’s really interesting, cheers for sharing. :+1:

Looks like you noticed the same things I did with plex. I’m glad I wasn’t just imagining things that Plex does scrape faster.

I did hear that Jellyfin has come on a great deal, certainly worth keeping an eye on every year.

I should have added that i do use Emby. Even though it’s not perfect it’s the best of what is available. They have been developing a new TV handler for a while now and i hope it will be better than the current shitshow. There’s no ETA for its release though.
