For how she uses it storage is more important than speed for the hard drive plus she can always get a ssd later as she can get 1 stick of 16gb ram instead of having to get 2 for upgradeing the ram

What all exactly does she… do?

Edit: Hmmm, I’m guessing 300 is max? Reading back now…

Also I get the need for cheap, but the cheapest listed board being from asrock does NOT sit well from me.

This cooler will shave 10$ off

Solid state memory is super cheap right now. The R5 2400G has a decent GPU on it… for an integrated solution. You can always add a better gpu later on. 16GB of RAM should be plenty for general use cases.

Modern Operating Systems such as Windows 10 and Linux expect an SSD to be the boot drive (C: or /) these days. Even if you do not need a fast drive for the work you do, you still need the SSD like a Texas rancher needs a car. One possible mitigation is to buy a $15-$20 120 GB boot drive in addition to the SSD. The difference is staggering.

As for RAM, single stick will downgrade performance for the GPU up to 50% depending on application. Better to spend the few extra bucks an 2x8 kit costs you, perhaps also go down in speed slightly.

You do as you wish, but you are crippling that PC for no good reason.

If you read up i am using windows 7 cant stand 8 or 10 so that is not a issue.

Yeah, like I said, your money, your equipment, your choices. Just pointing out that if you spend $30 more than you did now you will go from barely usable to pretty okay. The absolutely cheapest option is rarely the best option (but neither is the most expensive option objectively best, either).

Also, you really should consider upgrade to Windows 10 or a Linux OS like Ubuntu or Manjaro. I cannot in good conscience recommend you keep using a system that is about to reach EOL, and I strongly recommend against it. Your Windows 7 will be virus infested 9 months for now, it’s all but guaranteed.

Like I said… Your decision, but I strongly advice against your current path. What you do with that information is up to you.

I did it. I figured it out.

2200G isn’t that much less than a 2400G gpu wise, and really the big difference is CPU clock. But you know, who cares.

Dual channel ram, SSD boot, 1TB for storage, 80+ PSU, 300 bucks.

There ya go OP. Cheat the system.

Very true, but why not go 3200G at that point? Only a few bucks more, same compatibility, 10-15% boost in performance. Love that build otherwise.

[edit] Here is what I’m talking about, a couple bucks more allows you to have a pretty good performant system. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/HyRvV7

  • 3200G (no need for an aftermarket cooler for now)
  • 16GB 3000MHz RAM
  • B450 mATX motherboard
  • SSD Boot Drive
  • 1TB harddrive
  • 80+ PSU

I would urge you to not put your personal preferences into your sisters PC. windows 7 is done after the beginning of the new year. In a couple months it will stop receiving any updates at all. This will turn it into a security nightmare. Not to mention the fact that modern hardware basically isnt supported 7.

On my Dua’s build (A10-7870K) it started with an old 500meg SATA drive, not SATA 3 or SATA 2 just plain old first gen SATA

Later I added an SSD and 1 TB Sata 3. Last upgrade was putting in a GTX 1060 that didn’t even exist when I first built it.

Lastly: even the iGPU on the intel Skylake cpu’s will beat the GT 420

More an option rather then a suggestion

Trying to keep it at 300 flat without bios updates.

The MSI Max series need no Bios upgrades, but fair enough. Downgrade to 2x4 3000 MHz RAM and a 450W PSU, a CPU cooler still not required, and it works out: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/yxJM8M

I couldn’t find a cheaper better quality PSU than the one I listed.

Fine then, Thermaltake Smart 500W for a total price of $298.80?

Eh.

I’ve used that exact EVGA PSU for client builds and never got a complaint.

If that one ain’t poop then yeah I’d push for that.
