Suggestions for English class

So I need to find a novel to read for my English class. The book has to be fiction and originally written in English. As for language it would be nice with somewhat easy text (not that important). And lastly I hate reading fiction (and it has to be fiction) so I decided to read a philosophical fiction novel because I like philosophy. I'm trying to find a book with social criticism or at least a somewhat clear message.

how about the forest gump novel?

The first book of Dune. It is a science fiction so I guess falls under general category of fiction.

Lots of philosophical views are expressed in that book: ecology, society, human nature, religion.

How about something like Brave New World?  Or Lord of the Flies?  Or anything by George Orwell?

For something less dystopian...I've always been meaning to ready Walden by Henry David Thoreau.  It's apparently more about naturalism and isolation.

For clear and no-nonsense writing style, try Hemingway.  For really black humor and social commentary, try Anthony Burgess.  For unapologetic yet sympathetic reporting on murderer's intentions, try In Cold Blood by Capote.

Anywas...lots of options...waaaaay more than I could ever list.  Maybe pick a school of thought or set of themes that interest you and see which authors are listed in those categories?

Fiction. Social criticism. Written in English.

Easy, Moby Dick.

The Wars - Timothy Findley

Has to be the best book hands down for English. Warning: Has scenes of homosexuality, rape, coitus, death, and horror.

Thanks for suggestions, I'm gonna take a look at them and choose one.
