Sorry, not exactly sure where to post this vague issue. Just trying to figure out what it broken.
My PC randomly crashes, with no bosd. Firstly the audio will stutter for about 3-5 seconds but sometimes will recover and resume normally.
If it doesn't recover my pc will restart, it then hangs on the S.M.A.R.T screen right after post, the SDD/HDD doesn't pop up and say "ok" either, it just gets the top few lines written (that are always there when I startup and show no indication of errors) and leaves the rest of the screen blank. OR it passes that and hangs on the "loading windows..." (in the boot cycle not the windows gui), until I hold down the power button until it shuts off. When I turn it on a few seconds later, it works fine and I'm left wondering when its going to happen again.
I checked the event logs and it says
The Desktop Window Manager is experiencing heavy resource contention.
Scenario : Video memory resources are over-utilized and there is thrashing happening as a result. Reducing number of running programs and open windows may help resolve this condition.
Think I could of killed my GPU testing its o/c limits? I did mess with voltage, not more then 1225mv and its now stock everything, (msi twin frozr 3 r7950) The audio stutter happens more frequently in games I notice, Ill run a few heaven 4.0 benchmarks now and see if anything happens. Its a decently fresh windows install with only updated windows 7 ultimate and a few benchmarking/cleaning/media playback programs, all my games are on another ssd.
Rest of system: [email protected], 16gb Corsair Dominator@1912mhz, GA-990FXA-UD3, Azus Xonar STX, 2 Kingston Hyper X 3K SSDs, Seagate 3tb HDD.
Righto, things to check.
- That your SSD control method is set as 'AHCI' in the BIOS
- Every component is seated properly in its appropriate slot/connector
- Drivers, are all your drivers up-to-date.
- Temperatures (CPU,GPU, motherboard)
How long has this been going on for? Has this been since a recent windows update? (since Tuesday 9th)
Have you had any BIOS issues and what revision is it?
This may seem like alot to ask, but I want to eliminate as many possibilites as I can.

No problem for such a broad issue im prepared to answer everything, and thanks for the quick responce. SSD is set to AHCI, connections are firm, drivers are up to date but im also noticing an event log error for Driver/EtronXHCI in standby performance, maybe issues with ssd booting from sleep?
Temps are normal, but while running Unigine Heaven 4.0 I was getting decent framrates scoring 900 but every once in maybe 5 seconds it would seem to skip a second but it wasnt showing up on the framerate monitors, also msi afterburner was showing it thottling down to 65% most of the time only peaking at 99% very breifly but frequently. (when i first got the card it was running at a steady 99% and not over 65c, never seen 70c in both situations). Also this has been going on since before the windows update, and bios is F9 when I updated to F10a on my last mobo it glitched out with keyboards in the bios, most keys didnt work and the ones that did were remapped all weird. so I took it back on warrenty and got a brand new one
Does the audio crackle occur on the on-board sound as well?
Yep and crackle, event stutter would be an understatment its like and A-B Loop set half a second apart.
Test Prime95, see if the system crashes.
As this sorta points to either the CPU or the motherboard being damaged.
If you can test the GPU and the sound card in another system.
Ok I will run prime 95 tonight and post the results in the morning if theres an error otherwise I might let it run longer.
Although it seems pretty much like a hardware problem, it's always good to check if you're infected with malware or a virus. Heavy memory utilizations can be an indication of that. Just in case you know? Better to cover all bases.
Also if this did happen after a windows update, then you may want to try system restore as well as go back to stock clocks if you overclock.
Passed prime 95.... Just doing my taxes then bam! Music stutters and pc shuts off and does a fail restart, gotta love it. I really dont think its malware/virus but anythings possible right. No signs of a virus though. Im going to do some more stress testing on the gpu and watch its load levels and reinstall my etron usb3 and xhci drivers as they are having some event log issues. This pc has been nothing but headaches it doesnt go a month without something failing. Last month the mobo, then ram, cpu, case/fans, ssd, dvd drive... everything on the pc has been replaced at least once... Definatly switching up the brands on my next build.
could it maybe be a overheating power supply wenn gaming?
wich powersupply do you have?
Corsair AX-850, I was using a 600w Silverstone before. I never had any issues, just didnt feel like maxing out my psu while gaming anymore lol.
Downloaded Passmark Audio tester and my soundcard seems to be doing what its supposed to... almost blew my door off with 20hz. Its just that 65% to 99% jump in my gpu when I ran heaven 4.0 thats bugging me now, shouldnt it be at a constant 99%?
Ah no that psu will do fine. i think its maybe better to send back youre GPU for RMA.
did you update the bios from the gigabyte board to the latest version? gigabyte had many problems with theire bios versions at 990FX chipset boards the ud5 but probably also with the ud3.
try that first. ☺
Its F9, theres and F10a out but I had bad experiences with it in the past, I mentioned above. I dont think its a finished version but I could be wrong. And from experience I would say the issues with UD5 were hand in hand with UD3 with a few exeptions maybe.
My 7950 didn't come in a sealed box, didnt have the thin plastic wrap over the box. Could I of been screwed out of a quality card? They had one left at the store and I was all "gimmie gimmie gimmie".
The boxes tend to just have security seals now, rather than the plastic warp.
Try using a Linux distro on a thumb drive. If it crashes you know the issue is hardware based.
Could you elaborate a little more, Ive never used linux but have watched some beginner "what you need to know" videos. Maybe point me in the right direction. Also, wouldnt Prime95/MSI Kombuster or Unigine Heaven be enough to see if it's a hardware issue? I'm lookin at Breakin for a linunx distro, sounds like a good idea?
hmm well if you had an open un sealed box with youre gpu in it, that sounds s suspicious to me ☺ like i said there will be probably something wrong with the gpu... you could try to test the gpu into another system maybe if you have a friend where you can put in youre gpu to test...
the bios problems with Gigabyte boards are well known... i would also try to update the bios to theire latest, complete version.
If I use a Linux Distro to test the hardware (probably a dumb question) it's not going to use the drivers that are installed now, correct? Also The more im reading it just says its going to do what prime 95 does. Do you know of one that tests the gpu?
It's a longshot, but you did mention that the problems started happening after an update. Perhaps this is your problem?

I don't think it was an update. When I ran a large FFTs test on Prime95 it failed instantly, I was using a blend test with all my ram before. A day of overclocking later and now it passes so hopefully that fixes my issues. Looks like my cpu is just degrading over time. No BSOD though so I didn't think it was an overclocking issue.
Where is your old 600w psu? if its lying around just stick it in and see how things go. you dont have to install it, just leave the new psu screwd in your case, unplug it from the pehiperals and plug the old one.
If you have an unused hd lying around install windows in it and run the tests.
Maybe i read it wrong, but If things went haywire after you started using the new psu that could just be it. Even the best quality parts/brands can end up being faulty.
