I recently setup a new computer with 3570k, asrock extreme4 and 16GB of Gskill memory. The first 2 days everything was finr but now the cpu readings from Cpu-z and RealTemp shows the CPU clock between 1600mhz and 3800GHz when idling. I have not done any overclocking at all on the CPU or memory. The only thing i did was install the Asrock Tuning utility but never made any changes. Any idea why it is running at higher than stock cpu speeds when idling?
P.S Just to be on th safe side i went into the bios and reset everything to default. But no difference
Its the Turbo, you must not be fully idle or for whatever reason its using the Turbo Boost feature where it will turbo up to 3.8Ghz if it has thermal headroom to do so.
I do not think you should be worried but if I am wrong please correct me. I am assuming that you mean 3800mhz not 3800Ghz. The reason why this is, is because of intel turbo boost 2 technology. What this does is dynamicaly changes the clock speed of the cpu when the cpu needs / doesnt need it. you probably found that the i5 3570k is a 3.4ghz processor. The rated turbo boost for it however is 3.8Ghz. Some suggestions however as the cpu should never be going under 3.4ghz is to run prime 95 for at least 12 hours (do this during the night with nothing else running on the pc.) and if any errors come up you should be able to swap the cpu for warranty from the store you bought it from. Also you should uninstall the Asrock tuning utility as it is most likely just some rubbishy bloat ware. (Uninstall the Asrock utility before running prime 95.)
here is a place you can get prime 95 from: http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=205
if there are more questions you have or you find I have supplied you with false info feel free to email me at [email protected]
I dont think its the turbo, since i had disabled that in bios. Also i did run prime95 torture test for 9hrs and it resulted in no errors. I went back in bios and reset the setting , turned turbo boost off and killed a few services running in the background (Adobe updater and some apple services) and it seems to be running ok now, but the cpu readings seems higher then it used to be at the begining. I think it most likely services that are running that causing the high cpu clocks.
