So I've installed debian
sudo apt-get update
and followed this https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamOS/comments/26dugg/how_do_i_install_a_media_player/

I'm trying to play blu ray's through steamOS with a portable samsung blu ray player. Any Ideas

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
vlc : Depends: vlc-nox (= 2.2.0~rc2-2+deb8u1) but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: vlc-plugin-notify (= 2.2.0~rc2-2+deb8u1) but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: vlc-plugin-samba (= 2.2.0~rc2-2+deb8u1) but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

Please send which repositories you get your packages from (/etc/apt/sources.list), I remember having this exact issue, and I solved by manually installing vlc from earlier / later version of Debian.
