SteamBox/ Steam Linux Build ideas

Steam has had a linux client for a little while, but still havn't found any builds for a linux gaming rig. I understand most parts will be the same (case/ram power supply and hard drive).

For processor you would go with AMD 8350 or Intel i7 3570 / 3770 / 3820 . Mother board is next logically, becuse the software you would use for overclocking is different for brands/models, and idk how well they will work with WINE. Next is graphics card, yet again depends on software/supported drivers

I have had linux (debian, then mint) for a few years, but always move my monitor to on board graphics becuse I tried everything to get my graphics card working. With Steam coming to Linux, I would like to give it a go again, but I know that I am due for an upgraded computer soon anyway. I think it might be best to start figuring out my build with Linux support in mind.

I guess I'm a little lost on where to start. Any Linux Gamers out there?

Well, right now there is about like maybe 100+ games for Steam on Linux, so it's not plausible to build a system geared towards that.

CPU overcloking is mostly done in the bios so linux doesn't affect that. So it doesn't really matter what cpu you choose.

Motherboard is the same, get whichever you want.

As far as the GPU goes, i would highly sugget nvidia. Their closed source/proprietary driver is really up to par with their windows one.

They always support new versions of X-org(basis of the graphical environments) and always have support for their newest products, in contrast to AMD.

I highly recommend Asus motherboards. They tend to work best with linux.

For the GPU with OS driver, intel is the best. If you want more power go either with Nvidia or AMD. Nvidia had the better drivers but now they are on the same level.

Both support the newest X server when they release their drivers but if you want to test out new crazy linux graphics server (a.k.a. wayland) you have to use the OS driver and AMD definitly got the better one here.

Was thinking about a modded version of one of these
