So, this is a totally new OS? Are you going to be able to play non steam games on it?

I might use this + a kill your console pc and make my version of the next gen console :D

I'm just curious as to wether it will utilize hardware more efficiently than windows. I've never used Linux so I'll just keep my ear to the ground.

i play mostly source engine games so i might switch from windows completely

AWW YISS!

I want this to benefit the rest of Linux, not just Valve. I can't wait to get my hands on it, though; I'm very interested in looking "under the hood."

What's a good book or web resource to learn Linux and it's magical ways?

you wont need gnu/linux knowledge to install just know how to make a bootable usb drive and your probably good

Best way to learn Linux; Install Linux.

I highly doubt you'll be able to play non steam games on it in the near future.

Just wait... I sense a Linux game sale coming

cant wait for all the different steamOS distros

I believe SteamOS IS a distro...

SteamOS is a distro. He might be referring to how ubuntu is the main distro, but there are plenty based off it like Linux Mint etc.

A differnt distro could add a select at log in, KDE, GMONE, Or SteamOS. something like that.

Still like everyone else I haven't see it and I am only dreaming.

So will this use actual wine by default or some proprietary variation?

Neither. It will run Linux's version of steam, and play Linux steam games. LAter on, it may use Wine of some sort, but as of now, I can only see it running native linux games.

I think without it it would be as dead in the water a any other linux distro for people who already have hundreds of non linux games.  Steam want's a living room box. They're smarter than to not include some sort of method even if it isn't ground level.

What are we talking here, somwhere between 2-8% of games?

Indeed. +1

Side note, we need this upvote/rep system to be implimented soon.

Phantom is right. SteamOS is a Linux distro. If people treat it like Ubuntu, there will be 1000 spinoffs that are just reskinned SteamOS copies, which would technically be sub distros (?), if that's what you mean.
