STAX SRS-3170 Electrostatic Earspeaker System

Came across these on MassDrop and seen that they use some tech I have never heard of. So I figured I would ask of the only people on the nets opinion I value, my fellow Tekkies. What do you think of these? Is this tech groundbreaking? Worth it? If not worth it any high-end alternatives?

Hy Khiol,

I knew of the design, but I've never had a listen through something like this.

The specs are quite... well... exotic. In audio, specs are not everything and great specs do not mean great listening experience, but these are really something else... 7-41.000Hz max freq response range? Wow, given there is no commercial broadcast or material that has that much spectrum you'd be hard pressed to really 'use it', but if you get your hands on a 96Khz samplerate material you'd probably be amazed. The sensitivity value is also way above most stuff I've seen for studio use.

Amp specs are really good too, low HRD, class A amp...

These specs would justify the price tag, but again I've never used these specific cans.

But no, they're not particulary groundbreaking, they're definitely ultra high-end audiophile phones, but you'd need the source material to enjoy them or justify the expense... I would see these as companions to a great valve driven hifi system (you know, those 4000€ sets) used to listen to superaudio or exotic classical recordings. You'll never enjoy them on normal material, they will actually make anything commercial reveal all its limitation and compression artifacts...

As for high end alternatives, it depends on your purpose, you know. If you're a real audiophile that only enjoys music from superaudio and you transformed your bedroom into a  dedicated listening room, you might be the guy for these headphones. If you're into music creation and production, you'd have other needs and if you're just into a really good listening experience of not so exotic material, then you can definitely get an entire system for half price of these phone.

But if money is no object, I'd really like to try them.

Great find, though!
