State of Firefox

Just want to get a quick idea of everyone's experience with Firefox 47. To me, it seems to have significantly declined in stability and performance. This is getting to the point that I'm even thinking of switching my web browser to something a bit more stable and still open (thoughts on Chromium?).

I stopped using it when it kept asking me to reinstall my addons.

Chromium is better. Its open source so you know its clean. I've never really liked firefox because its always been slow.

Granted when I started actually using the web it was on a pentium M laptop but you get my point.

I recommend vivldi.

My last big issue with Firefox was... Hm, no, that was issue with YouTube... Nope. I am using Firefox for the last... 10+ years and had no significant issues, that will make me consider changing my browser.
PS: for my needs Firefox is just fine. Many people say it is not, but I haven't felt a need to change it...

I am using firefox across all platforms since its out of beta ... and so far nothing realy happened that would make me realy consider switching.

Only for netflix I have to use chrome on linux ... and that's not FFs fault, thats cause of DRM.

Years ago I used Chromium, but my job requires me to print pages with background images. Chromium didn't allow that, so I had to switch to FF. Might install it again to see if they have sorted that out already.

I love Firefox.

I have tried other browsers but I feel that most modern browsers tend to "dumb down" and simplify the user interface too much. With Firefox I can customize it to be old school with all the menus and buttons exposed.

I do have a problem with Firefox that they are trying to address in a future update. Lock-ups / system freezes with Java. Last year I had a problem with this and FF tech support had me uninstall FF and re-install with no plug-ins or extensions. I heard they are planning an FFx64 update where Javascript will run in a separate process so a Java lock up won't hang the whole system.

New software = buggy software

If you just want the benefits from using a modern well supported browser without buggy features, try an ESR release.

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/

Pale moon is also an alternative based upon Firefox 24 ESR that is compatible with firefox plugins.

I like firefox but the memory leaks + lack of garbage collection really slow it down.

I am still using Firefox as my main browser, because of Flashgot and FlashStopper. I'm sure there are extensions for Chrome that is similar to these addons, but I have no problems with Firefox anyway so I still keep using it. I've been using it before Chrome was invented, so it's just my preferred browser. However, I had to use Silverlight to watch videos for Netflix. Somehow, watching Netflix via Silverlight looks a lot better to me compared to the HTML5/ DRM version.

I use firefox as my preferable main. Chrome is my second. I use FF 55% and Chrome 45% of the time. I like the speed of chrome but I like the experience of FF. They're basically neck n' neck for me.

As a Ubuntu user, I use Firefox primarily, except for the times when I need to watch Netflix, Amazon Video etc, then i need Google Chrome.

I don't think a slight redesign would hurt, as the new version of Chrome looks 'nicer', but honestly Firefox still looks nice. That would be my only little caveat.

Of course, using Firefox with Netflix, Amazon would be great, but I do understand the obvious issues with that.

I use Firefox Developer Edition as my main. Because I do development and penetration-testing. I even install it on the computers I don't use for such things, just because I love the FFDE look. The biggest thing for me is the customization options and better themeing functionality over chrome. I just have some trouble some rare times with things not loading, usually images. That's when I load up Chromium. I've always hated how Chrome looks. Themes in Chrome always look so horrendous because they can only set a background image and change some colors, nothing more.

I really want to like Firefox, but when I watch YouTube videos about 80% of the time the video doesn't play. I'm not sure if it's because of Flash or what, but with Chrome I don't have to worry about any of that.

Please, please get rid of flash ... for most major video sites it is not needed anymore; and for sure not for youtube!

In chrome go to chrome://plugins/ and dissable it! - there are at least 2 known 0-days currently; aka, the bug is known, its abused and not fixed yet.. and bugs in software are like icebergs

I haven't had any issues since I returned to using it a year and a half ago. I had huge issues when I used it a few years back and switched to chrome for a while. I gave it another shot and have been happy ever since.

Firefox is slowly getting more and more bloated with shit "features"
that no one is asking for, nor will use. There really aren't many other
browsers to use other than forks of Firefox. You can debloat the
current Firefox in about:config, but it can be tedious.

I've never used Firefox extensively, I just use it for the FireBug add-on, which is great for web development.

the firefox beta 48 is much better try it

I have wondered if there was more potential for something noticed here seen as its based on Chrome?
Its ok saying its open source, but are you sure that people haven’t gone through every line of code even on larger updates?

**Firefox has been getting worse for me, 47 broke vsync on videos for me on Linux machines running both AMD & Nvidia recently, it also stopped the theme working that I was using, along with the 100k+ other users who probably use it. And menus glitch, performance is slowish. it takes long to load even after a few loads on a SSD and can hang on pages with lots of Gif's, it seems to be getting worse. Just FF47 with a few generic supported plugins. Flash can stop working on occasions, oh and you can hang your desktop for a good few minuets by opening an image from the web and then clicking the little folder icon to open the tmp file :/ **

Vivalidi seems like a better alternative right now. Opera (closed source) is so much faster and smoother, the layout & feature set is nice it rinses FF out to be honest ( - . - )
