Star Wars - The Last Jedi - Dec 15, 2017 [Spoilers]

Blade Runner 2049 and Mad Max Fury Road prove that you can make a sequel 30 years later that lives up to the original at least in quality. That’s what we haven’t had with Star Wars thus far. It’s so sad how much potential the sequel series had, they destroyed the entire expanded universe to make this series, and it has failed. It will be difficult to save this considering they ruined Luke and now Leia is not going to be in anymore. The only way they could save it is make Rey more relatable (by introducing gasp character flaws!), deviate heavily from the current soft-reboot-ness of TFA, creativity, original ideas, STOP BORROWING IMAGERY AND PLOT POINTS DIRECTLY FROM THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY, etc.

I hope Luke gets redeemed from his PTSD or whatever he has and becomes a wise hero again.

Wishful thinking. All the press attention so far has said this is a lot like Empire Strikes Back. I am definitely not paying to see this. If George sold the rights to another media company, maybe they wouldn’t had ruined it (not likely).

Lucas created Star Wars and it was awesome, then the EU came and just when you thought Star Wars couldn’t get anymore awesome, it did. Then the prequels came, and despite their shortcomings, it added a wealth of EU material, so net exchange was positive. The Galaxy was prosperous.

Then Kathleen Kennedy and Disney ruined Star Wars when they decided to wipe the EU from canon. I’m not sure how much JJ Abrams played a role in the Great Purge, but he ruined any chance of the sequel trilogy being good. They could’ve worked around the EU, but they were too lazy to do that, so they just wiped out everything. I could see some things being removed from canon but everything?!

Mad Max Fury Road smashed the crap out of the original.

Exactly! I don’t get why they couldn’t have just deleted anything past 33-35aby. Well I guess then they couldn’t make shitty spin off films like rogue one if they kept the EU… I hate Disney. They oversaturated the market with Star Wars brand, it could have still been cool had we just got a game or cartoon series every once in awhile. Now we get so much shit everywhere. Also, giving EA exclusive rights to Star Wars, what are they thinking? They clearly don’t give a shit about fans by that move.

I am happy Disney took it. I mostly ignore whatever social message they try and stuff in there. I go for the pew pew and the frew phu. Good old George royally f’d up the series. Most companies just do not have the resources and force (<-- haha … see what i did there) that Disney brings.

It’s so funny how people forget if it weren’t for George, there would be no Star Wars.

and…

So much money it’s like printing it.

They only care about the people that were old enough to see the original (what we now know as A New Hope) in the theater and their kids. Anyone who grew up with the EU doesn’t matter, because A) they most likely don’t have kids and B) they aren’t kids (so not as much potential profit to be made in their eyes). So anyone that wasn’t old enough to remember seeing any of the Original Trilogy in the theater until the Special Editions were released, who grew up with the games and comics, and massive merchandising doesn’t mean shit, because they don’t want a sequel trilogy as badly as the generation that remembers seeing the OT in theaters. Sure, they’d like it too, but the EU has been an alternative that has sated their appetites for decades. The generation that saw the OT in theaters though has been clamoring for a sequel trilogy since the end of RotJ…and that almost assures a profit to be made, a return on investment.

This is also why EA has gotten exclusive rights to develop Star Wars-based games, (Yes, such an epic fail, it could make its own saga!) and of course, no surprise, Marvel now has the rights to the comics, because Disney owns Marvel (which is kind of ironic, cause the comics originally started with Marvel). I knew it as soon as they announced the ST, the standalones, and killed the Clone Wars that Disney was going to kill the goose that laid the golden egg…and they did. But the real tragedy is how we get to witness not just the slaughter, but the butchering, the selling, the cooking, and consumption (and ultimately, excretion) of all the parts of that goose.

It’s been pretty obvious George has regretted his decision to sell Lucasfilm to the Mouse when he’s talked about it or been asked about it.

Oh, and I’m unimpressed by the Last Jedi trailer. My guess as to who the last Jedi are going to be are Ben/Kylo and Rey.

Fuck Star Wars. I’d gladly take back Jar Jar Binks to get rid of all these Mary Sues.

People on the internet say its way better then “The Force Awakens”.

To be fair, it has a way easier job. And I think Abrams bridged the gap between the classic trilogy and this new one very well. TFA has weaknesses but overall I really like the movie.

The Last Jedi is … it’s just everything, really. Not everyone will like that but I would strongly suggest to watch it.

Everything Finn and Rose did in this movie was hot garbage.

The main story line was great, and I don’t think old man Luke could have been done any better.

I think that was sort of the point. Their plan was shit. Poe made a colossal mistake in judgement that got a lot of resistance fighters killed. It turns out that the Resistance isn’t all that great. It’s filled with people who make plenty of bad decisions and bad decisions get people killed. The entire movie is about the failures of the Resistance. In the end they didn’t even manage to get any of their allies to come to their aid.

People criticize this movie basically because it didn’t make them feel good. It didn’t make them feel good because the good guys weren’t clever and strong enough to do anything other than try to outrun the First Order. The entire point of the movie was neatly summarized by the Code Breaker.

This might be the most thought provoking Star Wars movie yet.

I have to interject, I feel this star wars movie was nothing short of being awful. Fundamentally it is now appealing to a mainstream audience. Regarding the script it felt the writer saw star wars for the first time in his life this year. The plot felt like it was made up as it went along, anyway I will go through the pros and cons.

Pros:

  • Binary Sunset scene touched me at the end

  • The Kamikaze ship scene into the destroyer was amazing

  • R2 playing Leia’s message from ANH

Cons:

  • Snoke completely disposed of with no backstory etc. obviously Rian Johnson had no love for this character so lets just give him the darth maul treatment.

  • Same with Phantasm, don’t even like this character anyway but again, just completely slated.

  • Leia space walking (I’ll leave it at this)

  • Finn and Rose sub plot was pointless and didn’t feel like star wars

  • The whole Rey/Luke sequence was pathetic, its like the made up new features of the force with these skype calls with Ren and Rey. Throwing sabre away, titty milk, the creatures etc…

  • Cringe humour, that opening scene about being on hold (knew it was downhill from there), Luke with the leaf and Rey was completely out of character, in fact Luke was nothing like we knew him to be.

  • The biggest and most awful aspect of this movie was the script, I will quote one scene, “I am sorry”, “So you should be”. Like WTF. The script was just mainstreaming the whole lore of star wars.

I’m gonna have to stop there, could go on forever. The prequels are actually more watchable than this rofl. Of course it is just my opinion and I am happy to hear what you guys think.

PS Gonna watch some old republic trailers/ play KOTOR to cleanse myself from what I seen last week.

Sorry, in an effort to be short and vague I didn’t explain my point well. And I’ll blur the rest here to be less of an ass than I was last year…

Yes, the things the characters did was stupid, but that’s not what I’m disappointed about. I meant the story telling was garbage. Basically the entire half hour on the casino planet could have been replaced by a single line of dialogue: "Look sir, ships headed to the planet! We have life signs."
Then, when they were on the planet, Finn goes all suicidey and Rose pushes him out of the way, and then it looks like she’s dead but -surprise!- she isn’t. Basically everything they did had no consequences. It was just entirely a throw away story line.
Even the couple of feel good moments that come from the story line could have been accomplished better by just removing the whole casino sequence. The playing around with the walkers on the ship could have been an infiltration into the ATAT’s during the land battle on Crait, Finn could have been leading the ground troops (he obviously got training as an infantry man in the First Order) and had a showdown with Phasma there. Phasma could have beat his ass as expected and then not died and gotten the Boba Fett treatment.

Even more questions now.

Disney buying Star Wars was a mistake.

I didn’t like it but Disney knows I will die soon enough. You can see it is aimed to get a new gen of kids into star wars crack for life. That is ok I guess I got hooked as a kid on the original.
Maybe its time to retire my light sabre and lets a new gen have there alien penguins that chewie cant eat. Maybe he is gay in the next one that would explain a lot
