So I’m looking at building a new work PC at some point in the near future, and the prospect of spending the little bit extra going with a dual socket system for CPU rendering using the Supermicro H11DSi and a pair of used Epyc 7551s looks pretty good compared to the currently overinflated cost of a 3900X build, not to mention the performance uplift.
Space in our new office is going to be a premium, so I was wondering if anyone has any good suggestions for a midtower that I can fudge support for such large board in. @noenken’s had luck fitting one into a Corsair 400Q, but I can’t find them in stock in the UK anywhere, since they’re discontinued, and most cases I can find either have drive trays in the way, or the motherboard tray has a structural bend that would interfere with the board.
I don’t really have a need for 3.5" bays, as I’ll be using an M.2 drive and possibly a 2.5" SSD, but that can be taped up somewhere if needed…
The likes of Fractal / Silverstone / Phanteks, would be best bet of Mfr. They’d all host at least 1 tower, that expresses such board support, whether stated easily as EEB, or referencing some max limit like 275mm [for them not-so EEB, but over CEB obscures]
I totally had the same issue with the H11DSI ! I just bought a Rev2 for some dual 7502 epycs that I got… and Dangit all! I totally bought an e-atx case but had to RMA it cause it wasn’t SSI-EEB.
This is a budget tight render node build for rendering Houdini projects over the network. That said the case and everything doesn’t matter “as much” as a primary workstation.
In the end I went with Deepcool Matrexx 55 It has TERRIBLE front air flow, but I plan to use a heatgun on the adhesive and get that glass off the front replaced with a mesh something.
Initially I had gone with a darkFlash Gale DF140. It was going to be glorious, I almost started drilling mobo mounting holes… but I think for something this expensive… if your going to mod it, make the modding not be part of a primary component.
Can you rack mount it? Makes life a lot easier for big mobos and you can pick up a cheap server case that will have plenty of space, dual PSU support and room for all the fans.
Logic case UK is a good local vendor I’ve used before. (Not affiliated)
I guess, while I “could” I really am trying to avoid rackmounting. It just doesn’t make sense to me yet.
Doing the apartment with an office situation, and I don’t really want aton of noise. I am however thinking about doing some ducting to exhaust out my window!
