SSD & RAM upgrade for Lenovo Y400 Laptop

Morning guys, just got Lenovo Y400 and was contemplating to add SSD and RAM for the laptop. tek forums came first into my mind. Please recommend specs that best fit the system? And thank you. Specs fo the laptop are:

Do include a noob proof guide to migrate the OS to the SSD. I searched and found some recommendation towards Paragon 3.0. Would like to know the tek forumers ideas.

it's generally not a good thing to migrate it's usually better to just reinstall. so just make a dvd or usb drive swap and install. Windows 8 knows that you're installing it to an ssd and does things differently than if you install it on a HDD.

Thanks. Any guides that I should look into? Total newbie here.

Any ram suggestions?

Don't know much about laptop ram. I'd just shoot for 8 gigs of 1600mhz. Chances are the stock is only 1333, so you'll see a jump from that. Look for something with a lower cas, like 7 or 8. And as far as SSD's go, whatever suits your fancy, really. OCZ, Samsung, Adata, Kingston, etc. I have a samsung 840 series and I love it.

Thanks. What is the best ram speed for windows 8? What brand are you using? Logan did some reviews on ADATA sx900 which I think is good for the price but it is no where available in my country. Guess I have to settle on what's available then. Which is more important in ssd? The read speed or write speed?

For a laptop if you're gaming get 8gb's the best ram your mobo can take (Unless you have dedicated graphics...)

SSD's are favored for their massive speeds particularly the reduced boot and loading times for os and games... By that logic the read speed is most important but from what I've seen a high read goes hand in hand with a high write... Also in Logan's video he mentioned 2 other SSD's take a look for OCZ vertex4 and Kingston HyperX3k.

Grab the iso from piratebay. It's the most conveinent place. If you don't trust it find your own place.

it's a "trusted" torrent

and use that program to put it on a usb. You can try putting it on a dvd, but i recommend usb.

Thanks for the heads up. The laptop i have is bargain gaming laptop from Lenovo Y400, GT750m dedicated removable GPU. So 8GB RAM it is.. going to look into OCZ Vertex4 and Kingston then as both are available.

Thanks a lot. Going to go thorugh the comments here. Any stickies for migrating OS in tek forum?

ssds. ocz = high rma rate = avoid. stick with good nand companies like intel, samsung, crucial etc.

there are a few ways to go about migrating an os.

>take out the optical drive. temporarily install the ssd in there. boot into windows, then use migration software ie. "paragon migrate os to ssd" or the software that comes with the drive itself (samsungs migration utility is rather good and very user friendly.  once migrated to the ssd. swap out the hdd for the ssd, replace optical drive.

>easiest way and its what i do (for clients etc) take out their exisiting hdd, plug both the ssd and hdd into two spare sata ports on my desktop. then run the migration software from there. once done. install the ssd. then put the 2.5' hdd in a usb3 case for external storage.

as for ram. see how much you are using whilst doing the most intensive task on the laptop. if its creeping towards using up the 4gb then upgrade, otherwise it really a waste of money.

I only had to increase my laptop ram to 8gb due to using matlab for uni.

Thanks. that is very helpfull. doesnt sound diffficult from what i read online. Since migration software is provided in SSD, i'll utilize those then.

As for RAM upgrades, i'll work and play at this laptop. some video editing, simulations, and gaming (Crysis 3, AC3, Deus Ex, just to name a few). I'll stick to 4GB for the time being then, untill there is the need to upgrade.

but man, does Windows 8 suck or what?

Deejeta, where did you get your stats for high RMA?  You had me worried so I looked at the reviews on newegg for the vertex 4 and found that it scored 4/5 with 77% 5 with 394... I'm not doubting you, I just don't see it... They seem pretty solid with the odd RMA eveyonce in a while...

Also how does Kingston not make it onto your list for trusted nand flash companies but Samsung does?
