SSD Questions

Pretty simple, will it be worth it to buy an ssd if my mobo only has sata 2 ports? will the improvement  over hdd's (if any) be worth the cost of ssd's?

SATA II will be a serious bottleneck on the SSD. There would still be a very noticable difference, but not nearly the full capacity of the SSD.

The cost of an SSD is 4 fold. Less power, no moving parts, less heat, and faster tx/rx data. So getting an SSD will improve your overall system and load windows 5-10 seconds after post. So yes its worth it. If I could recommend a few. Kingston, OCZ, ADATA. and corsair.

The only time its a bad idea to upgrade to SSD is drivers. If your board isn't compatible with AHCI then your out of luck on a SSD.

The money isn't going to be thrown away, you can carry your SSD over to another mobo anytime you want.

I would focus on getting sata III with sata 6GB/s ports becuase that will give you the full power of the ssd unless your going to go insane over 10 seconds boot time i would just stick to normal hard drives if your looking for faster speed try a WD velociraptor or something with a rpm higher than 7200.

I use an SSD with sata 2 ports on my desktop as well and I can tell you even though it will not work at it's full potential it will be worth the money.

Everything will just run much faster then when using a normal HDD.

Just buy a sata 2 ssd if you dont have sata 3 on your mobo :)

I think sata 3 and sata 3 are both backwards and forwards compatible so no need to worry about that I think.
