SSD + HDD Ideal Configuration

Hello Tek,

Let's say I'm in the market for getting my storage figured out on my computers. What would be the ideal configuration for my devices? For example, should I just install my OS on the SSD and use the HDD as storage? Or would it be better if I used the SSD as cache instead? Perhaps a different configuration?

My laptop will be used for school (Computer Science). So productivity is desired. / LENOVO Y580
My Desktop has all my games and entertainment media. Specs as follows:

CPU: Intel i7-3770K
GPU: EVGA Geforce 760 OC Edition w| ACX Cooler in SLI with MSI Geforce 760 Afterburner OC Edition
PSU: ULTRA 750W 80+ Bronze
RAM: A pair of PATRIOT 4GB sticks = 8GB total
MOBO:  MSI Z77A-G45
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro

What are the best storage configurations possible for these devices??

Thanks!

The HDD's cache is fine, usually people find 1TB/2TB HDD for data then 120-256GB SSD for OS and Games and a few important apps.
