Spelunky windows 8.1 BSOD

So I am really into Spelunky and since I updated to windows 8.1 (maybe shouldn't have) it crashes into a BSOD after about 10-15 minutes. It gives me a warning sometimes that I am out of memory but that is not true since I have plenty to go around. I added some virtual memory, which makes it run a little longer, but it still crashes eventually. The message I get is: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL(igdkmd64.sys). The normal internet says an intel driver problem, but all my drivers and everything is up to date. Should I just wait untill it is fixed/fixes itself or can anyone help me get my Spelunky fix? (pun very intended) It crashes only when playing Spelunky.

I am using an ASUS N56VZ laptop (with 250mb samsung 840 ssd put in, old hdd is in place of the dvd drive now) and my trusty xbox controller ofcourse. Any additional details I can give to help, please ask. Thanks in advance

Just how full is your ssd ? You need ten or fifteen percent left free . Next would be when was the last time you did a full malaware scan with something like malawarebytes and a boot scan with something like avast ?

95GB free in my SSD still. I will google malawarebytes and see if I can scan with AVG. Thanks for your advice, will post any results.

Lastly just how much stuff do you have in your start up .

Just windows stuff (or stuff I don't know and am too chicken to turn off) and CS6 service manager, AVG and dropbox. 10 things total max so I don't think that's too crazy either. I often run 3ds Max, Zbrush, UDK, Photoshop and about 20 firefox tabs at the same time though so just Spelunky and firefox shouldn't give me issues I would think.

Already got 7 malware objects though, I don't know if that's a lot, but that was a good tip I think.

Usually when you start to run out of resources , either you are the cause or malaware is involved . :) Be sure to do a boot scan . The only things i allow in my start up are the antivirus , malaware scanner ,  my system maintenance tool and system support like for my mouse , keyboard and catalyst . Just because i am too lazy to open that stuff every time i boot up . So you should be able to close down any programs that is not vital to your system operations . So basically any of the programs you use that happens to be in your start up . I recommend leaving any system security in place .

Oh and when your done double check your drivers again. Just to be on the safe side .

Well I let a few things be like "a program that manage wireless devices in system" (yes it is literally called that), hkcmd module (from intel), igfxtray module (intel), persistence module (intel), Nvidia, switchboard server (adobe) run because I am not sure what turning them off would do. But maybe I should experiment a bit.

My laptop starts up in just a couple of seconds though so that's why I never really payed attention. With the SSD windows 8(.1) really shines.

The first pass of malwarebytes didn't fix it but I ran a second pass and got rid of more stuff, now letting AVG do some work and will try again if possible (it's 5:22AM here so I might fall asleep)

That second pass seemed to at least help the problem. I am still getting the low memory notification, but no BSOD or shutdown. I do see however that even with just firefox open half my memory is being used (49%). I will have to analyze that more tomorrow (well today, later in the day). Good night and thanks for all your help!

Yup you may need to clean your browser up also . Look at all the addons and extensions you are running .

I cleaned my browser history and cookies but still the same problem. I notice though that while playing Spelunky my C drive gets use spikes up to 100%. Memory doesn't go about 50% and stays consistent. All my steam games are installed on my E drive though... Could this be the source of the problem? What can or should I do about it?

Actually figured out it runs fine in windows 8 compatibility mode...

Good job on figuring out . Never hurts to do a little housekeeping .

Yes I agree. It helped make my laptop better at least. And I know just a little more :) So again, thank you very much, I can play my favorite game again :D

Same thing with sleeping dogs only running compatibility modes doesn't help. :'(
