Sound card compatability

Hi there. I know on PC PartPicker that this sound card I have says it isn’t compatible with my motherboard but I still wanted some insight on the PCI-E slots and whether or not I can still use it on my motherboard or will it mess up a slot or the whole board or is it safe?

Sound Card: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/HLGkcf/asus-sound-card-xonardg

Motherboard: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/K3ndnQ/msi-mpg-z390-gaming-pro-carbon-ac-atx-lga1151-motherboard-mpg-z390-gaming-pro-carbon-ac

That card is PCI.

The motherboard has only PCIe slots.

The two are not compatible.

Leading on from that, sound on motherboards nowadays is pretty passable, as long as you’re not using front panel connectors, which are normally pretty badly grounded. Your current sound card probably comes out a little worse off in comparison to that motherboard’s setup.

I have heard of, but have not seen, PCIe 1x to PCI adapters. I doubt it is worth it, but YMMV.

If you are serious about sound quality I would recommend a USB connected external sound card. These generally (may want to double check) have high quality power supplies with minimum noise. And the DACs are not inside the case surrounded by high noise components.

Start off with onboard sound. That motherboard has the current top of the line Realtek chip. If you find it lacking, or has issues like background noise and crackling (which can happen if the board manufacturer cheaps out on their onboard sound design) then go with an external DAC (USB or optical). Unless you really need a specific feature from a sound card, I wouldn’t bother with them.
