Sound bar under $150

Looking for a sound bar for my mom that’s under $150. I know for a fact her TV has optical out, not sure about ARC (Its an older 1080p set). Would like an FM radio built in if that’s possible, if not well no worries. I was thinking 2.1 system as that would be more than enough. Also Bluetooth would be nice, so my mom could link up her iPod or phone.

Just looking for general recommendations. I would go to the store, but things are still kinda funky in my state. Not sure if Best Buy is allowing shopping without an appointment, because yeah that’s a thing now.

If you have space for a proper bookshelf, why not that? Even a cheapo-ish Edifier speakers works wonders (lacks base though).

Has soundbars gotten better these days?

They can’t, because physics. :stuck_out_tongue:

Seriously, even a cheap pair of stereo speakers will put any soundbar to shame. Not necessarily in terms of “quality of sound” … whatever you think that is, but because of the fact that no soundbar can be a real left and a real right channel. The most a soundbar can do try to fuck with you and pretend to be more than it is. But that is all falling apart the moment you leave the perfect listening position … not even talking about the acoustic imperfections any real room has naturally.

So … fuck soundbars.

The cheapo Edifiers are honestly better than I thought. I have a pair 1280s and I got those for about 70,- Euros, I think.

Because I think my mom rather have the sound bar. She just got rid of her receiver. She is looking for something small and easy.

Hmm, $150 is a bit tight for a 2.1 soundbar setup that actually sounds decent.

  • Yamaha YAS-109 - Just north of your price range. Has BT and all that jazz. No separate sub. Yamaha is a good brand.
  • LG SL4Y - Just above your price range again. BT and everything. Does have a separate sub. Very popular system.
  • LG SK4D - Basically the same as above, but different?
  • Roku soundbar - No seperate sub, but has the Roku smart TV stuff built in if your mom likes that kind of stuff.

About a year ago I ordered three sound bars, one after the other, testing them and returning them to Amazon.
LG, Yamaha, anything under $1500 isn’t going to be worth jack. You’re going to get bloated bass and rattling. I just went back to my Sony bookshelf speakers and receiver. Ain’t pretty but at least it sounds good.

What’s the room size and viewing distance from the display?

If I had to guess 15x10 in feet. Viewing distance is about 8 feet ish maybe less. It’s only a 42” TV. Not looking for theater grade sound. Just something that faces the person watching as the TV is mounted to the wall.

how good is her hearing? like with good monitors and people with horrible vision, it doesnt always make sense to spend more money if the person using it cant tell the difference.

Better than my dad. LOL. She doesn’t seem to have issues. The issue is her speakers on the Tab are on the back. With the TV being close to the wall it just sucks. She’s not going to want something fancy or big.

Thoughts? My dad was looking at this one, so I guess he might throw down on getting one as well.

Many. You wouldn’t like them.

Need more than that. Just saying. Also like I stated above. Its not for me, its for my mom, she is 60 and we are just looking for something that’s better than the built in speakers that are muffled by the wall the TV is mounted to. Not looking for Dolby Atmos IMax quality theater sound.

OK, where do you mount the soundbar? You’re not putting it on the floor, are you?

We have a TV stand under the TV. Thats where the sound bar will be going.

Then why not put a pair of speakers there? Worst thing that can happen is that you have less stereo imaging as if you put them further apart. You’ll have bigger drivers which means better sound and it will even cost less. Setup is super easy as well.

Look, here is a pair of Edifier speakers that will take a simple optical cable and just make sound. With a remote for volume.

There is no dolby, no surround, not anything special. It’s a pair of active speakers … for people with two ears. That’s it. No amp or receiver required or anything. And it’s way cheaper than the stupid ass Bose as well.

or a swan 2.1 setup  Oops premium now…

The old man yesterday was like I don’t think we need a external sub. I think that’s why he liked the Bose as it’s one device and like 2 wires. I’m going to see what he says about the speakers @noenken suggested as it’s just an extra wire that we hopefully can hide.

A decent set powered speakers should serve your basic needs well. Sound bars just mostly suck.
