Sonos CR100 forced obsolescence

Is this what will happen with things like Nest thermostat?

Probably yes, 99% sure.

That is what will happen to every device that needs a server connection to “the cloud”.

I wouldn’t necessarily call this forced obsolescence. 13 years is quite a long time to be supporting a product, even if it’s integrated into your ecosystem. If anything, it’s just normal - technology advancing - obsolescence. It’s been replaced by other devices, and those devices have been replaced by their app. And now the app’s functionality is being replaced by Alexa and Google Home integration.

If this was a speaker they were ending support for, I’d understand people reacting negatively, but the number of people using these devices is probably <0.01% of their customer base, considering how much they’ve expanded over the last 5 years. From a financial point of view, it’s better to have developers working on their current apps/products, than supporting their outdated ones.

Moral of the story - buy a dumb speaker and a smart dongle, like a Chromecast Audio.

They’re offering $100 off your next Sonos device which is nice

I can’t think of anything electronic I’ve ever kept for that long
