Alright guys, how's it going? I'm going to be building either the $375 or $550 rigs that Logan put up on TekSyndicate. However, I'm going through and watching the How To Build A PC guide that's put up and I have a few questions.
First: Standoff Screws. Do I have to buy them separate, do they come with the Mobo, or what?
Second: Fans. Do they come with the case? I assume it varies depending on the case.
Third: Thermal paste. Does it come with the CPU? If not, where do I get it?
Fourth: Cables. Does the GPU come with the proper cables? Are the SATA power cables and such included when you buy the Case/HDD?
I guess that was kind of all the same question. "Does (x) come with (y)?" I just wanted to break it down so no one would say, "Yeah, everything comes with it all when you buy it" and then I get the GPU and there are no cables, or I get the MOBO and it has no screws.
1: Most standoff screws come with the case about 99% of the time. Some cases already have them built in (C70 Vengeance for example). If you do need to buy them, make sure you have the same size for each standoff.
2: Most cases come with 2 fans at least. One in front and one in back. You can always buy fans if you dont have enough.
3: Almost all CPU's come with a heatsink with pre-applied thermal paste. Some aftermarket heatsinks also come with thermal paste that you apply yourself. If you dont have thermal paste, you can always buy some online or at your nearest pc store (Radioshack has it as well)
4: All power cables come with the powersupply unit. To make sure your GPU will get the correct power cables, do research on the minimum power limit needed for the GPU, step it up by about 50 watts from the recommended and almost all the time you will have the correct cables. Only some cards come with cables and most of the time they are Molex to 6/8 pin adapters. All SATA data cables come with your motherboard, and all SATA power cables come with the power supply
Whenever you're ordering a part, usually there are multiple pictures of said part, with at least one picture showing all that is included in the box it comes in. Also you can see these details in the product description/details section.
Thanks much for answering that. I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to the hardware inside of a computer so it always helps when someone else tells me things like this. :) And you did more than just answer me; you went on to explain certain things that will not only help me build my first rig using the provided spec sheet from Logan but will also help me build my own rigs down the road. Thanks again.
While I'm at it, I do have one more question. In the $550 build video, Logan mentions that the i3 is good for gaming, while the Athlon is better for creative applications. I'm going to be using the rig for game development using either Unity, UDK 4 or CryENGINE 3 and for fairly serious gaming such as DayZ, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed, etc. Which path would be better for the overall usage, Intel or AMD?
Just gonna throw this out there, those builds logan posted are kinda old. The tech industry moves quickly, so you'll probably want a more updated build list.
Might I recommend this build?

Similar to Logan's builds, more updated components.
When you say it moves quickly, do you mean that this build list will be outdated in two months time? That's probably when I'll have the cash to put together the build. Also, a $400 machine? Pretty nice. :)
no I mean that buld was outdated two months ago, cloudscorpion or I can build a more effiecient build that is faster, especially now so with november deals, just give us a maximum budget and whether or not you are going to OC or not
You guys are awesome. My absolute max budget is $550. I'm trying to sell my 360 on Craigslist, and I'll also be putting my guitar and amp up there soon. I'm not going to OC because I have no idea how to and because I don't want to risk burning up anything.
Don't be afraid of it, we can help you. Its easy, and you won't burn anything out, its very difficult to do on modern equipment, you'd have to be doing something fairly insane to actually cause that to happen, and even then, return it to the store saying it didn't work when you put it in. Simple.
Not quite so simple when you're buying online. The closest computer hardware store is about 70 miles away. And gas costs means less money I can spend on the rig. Anyway, I may OC whatever is OC'able. If it means I can get more bang for my buck, then why the hell not?
Ah, well by store I didn't actually mean walk into the store and return it, just send it back as defective, lots of stores will pay to have it shipped.
With the A10, you can get a sick OC on the IGP, makes the chip worth way more than it costs. Can also get a decent OC on the CPU itself, bring up into the low 4GHz area.
I assume IGP means integrated graphics processor. Sounds like fun stuff. I put my xbox on craigslist and I'll be putting up my electric guitar and amp. Anyone interested? :) Jackson JS32 Rhoads (made in India. No FR.) and a Crate XT120R. $250 for the combo. Only payable in lamb's blood (or cash.)
Anyway Scorpion! Thanks for the info. When I get the cash, I'll be sure to post again with an outline of parts I find and then you guys can tell me 'no, that part is crap and is going to be outdated next week' and then reccomend a different part that's cheaper and 12 times better. Thanks again. :)
alright I am $17 over budget I can't keep my standard of quality AND a 7850 and be with in budget so here is my take on it, if you want to try your hand at overclocking cloudscorpion might have a AMD FX build that would be faster if you OCed
the 630w PSU is on sale for the same price as the 530w so why not, same goes for the i3 3220 and 3225, the 3225 has better HD 4000 intergrated whice means it will have higher resell value say for HTPC owners
Hello, I have a question about how big a power supply I need. My current config is: i7 3820, Asus Sabertooth X79, 32 gb's of ram, 1tb black caviar hdd, 2 Matrix hd 7970 ROG platinim gpu's all in a coolermaster cosmos II
I don't do very much over clocking. I was wondering if a XFX 1000W PRO1000W Ltd Black Edition Single Rail 12V 83A 24PIN ATX Full Modular 80PLUS Platinum PSU is enough power. This is my first dual gpu configuration I have done and I am curious if more is needed to properly power the cards and possible modding in the future like lights, more fans, hdd, upgrade to ssd's, after market liquid cooling ect ect..
You're posting this in the wrong part. You need to make a new topic. I'm sure someone can answer you, but I can't. I'm just letting you know it's the wrong area for posting.
