Hello everyone from Tek Syndicate!
So lately i’m having some problems with my current laptop that i use for school, it’s an old Dell XPS M1330 and in the last weeks it has been working fine, nothing bad at all also i just recently installed Ubuntu Gnome with Windows in dual book and learn a few things here and there with linux.
I always had my laptop connected to the charger because the battery is very old and it doesn’t last very long. Last week i was using my laptop normally and i noticed that it was charging and then discharging and doing that repeatedly even when it was connected. I supposed that it was a false contact with the DC power jack but also i noticed that the power brick of the charger was very hot.
So i was wondering if anyone knows what could be the problem with the laptop, is it the DC power jack or the charger itself maybe?
I'm using a four year old laptop and it displays charging and discharging constantly even though the battery is as dead as a wedge.
It says "charging 0%"
Well i think it happens the same the only thing is that the battery still charges and the after some time it stops even when it's connected.
My guess would be that your battery is on the way out. How old is it? I just looked it up. It came out in 2007. I'm amazed that the battery has lasted this long.
How hot is that brick?
The battery it charges but only last like about 15 mins at most. I got that laptop a few year a go and it worked fine until the problem with the battery.
I don't know exactly how many degrees or like that but it gets some what hot after a time even one of my friends said that smelled like an iron lol
Try this. Take out the battery. and see how it goes. If it only lasts fifteen minutes, it really isn't worth having in or burning your house down over:)
I would have answered sooner, but my notifications aren't working properly.
I'm assuming since he is running a nine year old laptop he doesn't have the money.
Could be the laptop charging cable, DC jack, OR the battery. You'd have to do some testing to find out which it is.
That's why I want him to take the battery out. If the Dc adapter cools down, it's the battery. If it stays hot, it's the adapter.
So here's an update about the laptop. I decided to not use it for a few days and today i decided to take it to my school and do some programming stuff and i noticed that the battery now show up as charging and doesn't do some weird dis-charging even connected. It's really weird. But i will have in check the dc adapter or the power brick if it starts to act like that again. Btw thanks to all for your responses :)
Anyway i just recently finished my build and i think i will start saving up for a cheap laptop just for school work, any suggestions? It's only going to be for school homework like programming, office and also i will be using some software like Multisim and Matlab but not in an intensive way, also some web surfing/youtube. I think my budget is in between 200-250 ish, the less the better i think(no used or ebay).
This was about the best I could do. You'll probably want to put a new hard drive in but you should still be on budget. No worries. Glad I was able to help.
Looks like a good option :) I can swap there the HDD that i already have but anyway i would like to save for a ssd too. Thanks for the suggestion!
So, i'm bringing back this topic because my laptop it's starting to fail again unfortunately. I did take the battery out and my laptop just turned on for a while and later it shut off. The charger has a active LED and it was on all the time. I'm starting to think it's the charger but i don't know :/
