Some Gaming Laptop Questions

I am currently upgrading my PC (see the Build A PC section for my thread), but I am also looking into some gaming laptops. I am going to need a laptop for school and for gaming on the move (WoT tourneys). I want to spend under $1000, and I have a few questions:

  • What are some solid dedicated laptop GPUs?
  • What kind of performance do these deliver?
  • (General performance, don’t worry about looking up benchmarks because I can do that once I’ve decided)

I need a pretty beefy laptop, with not only a good dedicated gaming GPU but a good CPU with solid in-core performance as I will be playing single-threaded/poorly optimized games such as World of Tanks and Minecraft modding. I also plan on doing graphic design, so a solid CPU for Photoshop and such would be nice. If anybody has any recommendations on a good gaming laptop, or which kinds of GPUs to look for in order to give me solid performance for my needs, I would be eternally grateful.

I think anything above a 960m is good enough. They deliver good performance at 1080p. Keep in mind, you might not want as much AA on smaller screens.

IPC performance for Intel's mobile CPUs is pretty much the same for i5s and i7s. The quad core i7s would give you a benefit over the dual core i5s in general use, as well as gaming. Far Cry 4 doesn't even launch by default on two core CPUs.

Thanks, that's exactly the kind of advice I needed.

I always seem to recommend Lenovo, but they do produce decent quality laptops for the price, their Y40 and Y50 line is pretty decent. Depending on how large a laptop you want.

960M pretty much sits on the 1K USD line.

Taking in with others advice, I recommend that you get a Clevo rebrand like Sager or Eurocomm. They are extremely fantastic for the money.

I'll take a look into that. 960M will push the budget, but I'd rather buy once than have to replace a sluggish laptop only a few years later.

Thanks, I'll take a look at those
