well to me it sounds like some full screen programs are sending a wrong refreshrate/reso combo.
Doesnt your monitor say 'incompatible mode' or something?
If your monitor doesnt say nothing at all and just shuts down then the monitor seems to be the problem.
No it isn't the monitor i've tried my old 19inch, my televison and my BenQ RL2455HM. None work and they just shut down.
but ... then its direct3D related? can you try to find an opengl app and see if it persists?
