[Solved] Windows 10 update major(ish) problems

Hi all, (Hoping this is in the right section),

my laptop running windows 10 (hp envy 15) while updating, restarted at around 30%, which after restarting, decided to disk check, diagnose and run startup repair, all after which decided to tell me that the hard drive is locked.
At current, everything I have tried has not worked, but will be trying various other "fixes" that i find.
I currently don't want to wipe my hard drive, however, if it is the easiest fix, I will. Also, if someone knows of a good way to be able to get all data off my laptop, that would be fantastic.

thank you all who reply. I hope to have this fixed soon.

edit: Don't know how to select solved, just changed title

Solved by wiping and re-installing

Get a second computer and a HDD dock and pull your stuff off, wipe, install, put back in dock, flop shit back, you're good.

Had to do this in XP as a job for 3 years :I

Seems like the easiest option. Thanks.

As I upgraded from 8.1 to 10, will it keep the same activation key?

It should do - worst case scenario if a complete re install is needed, fresh install 8.1 from an ISO and upgrade again to 10 before you do anything else

Awesome, thank you both for the help

@Jeghost Windows 8/8.1 is not (legitimately) available in ISO form. Windows 10 is though, from the Microsoft website. It can be found here:

You will need a USB stick to put it on, and of course another computer. If you have already upgraded to 10, it will automatically active on your laptop, as the key is stored in the BIOS.

On installation, it will give you two options; one, repair/upgrade; two, clean install. You can attempt a repair, if you like. With the repair/upgrade option it says that it will keep your data. However I have had bad experience with this. There is always a chance of data loss when performing such system critical operations. I think Windows only keeps what is in the home folders, too; such as 'my documents', 'my pictures', 'my videos'. I would strongly advise backing your data up beforehand.

To get your data off (without having to remove the drive from your laptop, and plug it into another computer) you will need an external HDD. You will also need a Windows live CD (it is called CD, although they are usually put on a USB stick). This is basically a Windows OS on a USB stick. It will allow you to bypass your HDD. It does not need installing on your system like traditional Windows; it works straight out the box. This will allow you to get into your computer and backup all your files to an external HDD. You may also be able to use it to fix issues with your system. I highly suggest running CrystalDiskInfo, which will tell you if your HDD is failing.

Here is a video tutorial on how to create a live CD:

Use a HDD tester first. I've seen a bunch of lock ups cause of a bad/going bad Hard Drive. Test it first with hirens or a HHD tester first, you want to verify the drive you're installing on isn't shot. Any bad sectors could be big problems later.

I could swear , i just downloaded an official 8.1 iso from MS.

I heard allot of similar complaints about the new Anniversary update.
That seems to brick some Windows installs.
Not sure what its all about, but you probably have to do new clean install again.

Running into random system freezing with no kind of error reporting that i can find. One clue is that it banging the drive at 100 percent making me think page file config ect... but it is not consistent. The latest update yesterday nuked my entire wifi config. Had to uninstall and reinstall drivers and reconfig till next time. Kind of surprised it didnt take out my audio drivers ( which it usually does :( ) I had no issues with the boot loop when i updated ? I will clean install and form a new opinion in about a week or so.

I HAVE TO SAY: CLEAN INSTALL MAY WORK AGAINST YOU IF YOU ARE ALREADY HAVING ISSUES :) from a driver standpoint

Are you sure?

@Freaksmacker @anon37371794 I stand corrected. I remember trying to download the W8 ISO from MS a while back, to no avail. I still don't see the W8 ISO available, so I think that they may have released this with the 8.1 update.

I just downloaded a fresh iso after the big update so i can run it without the 10 nagware. :)

TBH they're not really making it easy to find the older Windows ISO files, it's all about Win10 nowadays.

And the original Win8 isn't available at all indeed. they ditched that version completely shortly after the release of 8.1

Updated today my Envy DV6 to the anniversary (of blasphemy) update and, aside from minor issues, everything looks fine (knock on wood). I'm using a clean install of W10 so maybe that's your issue. Do a clean install and see how it goes.

Today I lost some hours of work because my desktop decided to update too ending in a total crash of the system...really MS, REALLY?

So did you manage to sort your laptop out?
