Hi there good people,
background if you’re interested:
my NAS needed a new motherboard and since i do not really use multiple NICs with it, i decided to go for the 2x10GBe variant instead of the 4x1GBe.
I don’t reeaally need 10GBe, but now since it is there i’m thinking about upgrading the network
Fyi, mainboard ist the Supermicro Mainboard A2SDi-H-TF
Actual question:
My PC has the following hardware:
- Asus Crosshair Vii Hero x470 (Mainboard Site)
- Ryzen 3900x (-> 24 Lanes)
- Two m.2 SSds with 3.0x4
- 6800xt
GPU is of course in top x16 slot. One m.2 is in the bottom right slot. One m.2 i added via a pcie adapter to the bottom pcie slot, in order to keep the GPU x16. As fas as i cann tell, i checked with CPUZ this works.
Now i want to add a 10GBe NIC. But this will drop the GPU to x8. With this mainboard.
Because i cannot see a configuration where this can be avoided. Does anyone maybe?
The other option i thought about was buying the AsRock x470 Taichi Ultimate which already has a 10GB NIC. (Mainboard site) And selling the Asus mainboard. Which might even be cheaper than buying a 10GB PCIe card
With the Taichi, as far as i can tell from the manual, one m.2 slot always has 4x PCI Lane, and the other one disables the bottom PCIe slot so the GPU stays at x16. And since i do not need to add a 10GB PCIe card, everything will be ok, right?
I also considered just dropping the GPU to x8 with my current mainboard and watched some videos and read some articles on that. I would not mind the 1-2% performance drop, they all say it just is.
But all the articles and videos are several years old and the GPUs do not have more than 8GB of RAM.
And 3.0x8 lanes has an 8GB throughput if my research is correct.
Since the 6800xt has 16GB, i do not think the performance drop will stay at only 1-2% (in scenarios where more than 8GB are used. High Res gaming etc).
So am i wrong with my thoughts on the AsRock Taichi Setup or the drop to x8 lanes with the 6800xt?
Thank you all
EDIT PS:
I am not using the 2 m.2 simultaneously. One has a Linux installation the other one is the windows one. So they are never used at the same time. Maybe some other solution is possible with this?
But since everything has to be plugged in i dont think it allocates lanes on usage right?
