[SOLVED] If i buy a new mobo to replace my old one do i need to reinstall Windows and my data?

Here is my current gaming pc build and motherbord listed below in the link ⬇⬇⬇ http://pcpartpicker.com/p/rdt7qs

To be honest i still don't know what new mobo i plan to get yet.

I'm afraid you are probably going to. I believe windows locks to the MAC address on the mobo, and even if you can put your hard drive on the new board without getting licensing issues you will likely start getting driver issues. Personally I would recomend reinstalling, move everything you need off your computer or onto a different harddrive. If you get an issue reinstalling with your copy of windows you might be able to get microsoft to give you a new code if you explain you are just changing mobos.

Thx i was hoping i didn't have to but looks like i do

Sometimes, but not always. A lot of the time, if it's the same chipset, you won't need to reinstall the whole O.S, just drivers.

personally, I have found it just ends up being easier to just do a clean reinstall, however if you have a lot of stuff you really want to keep without moving around, you could always try and just make sure you get rid of all your drivers so you can install the new ones without issue. The worst thing that will happen, you will just need to reinstall and have wasted a few hours.

My mobo is a MSI 760GMA-P34(FX) what would be its chipset?

Is there a tool or software that can uninstall the mobo drivers for me, im not exactly sure on how to do that

according to the new motherboard, are there any specific feuture you would like?

FX6300 is basicly less powerhungry then a FX8 core chip.
So if you dont realy care about dual gpu setups,
a decent 970 chipset board would basicly be totaly fine for your needs.

Happily enough, if you run windows newer than windows 7 you can flop systems at any time. Very convenient.

Im fine with anything as long as its a full atx board and wont make me have to reinstall my OS and data would a ASRock 980DE3/U3S3 ATX AM3+ be a good choice?

What do you mean by"Flop systems " i got Windows 8.1

Would this mobo work ASRock 980DE3/U3S3 ATX AM3+ ? It has the same chipset.

  • Asrock 970 performance
  • Msi 970A Gaming
  • Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P
  • Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0

These are a bunge of good 970 chipset boards for a FX6300.

Thx looking for specific chipsts is a lot of work, tbh i thought the chipset was 760G

760G is basicly an older chipset.
AM3+ more up to date chipsets are 970 and 990FX.
These boards have more feutures aswell.

i assume you are only aiming to game with 1 single gpu, so basicly all you would realy need is a 970 chipset board.
990Fx chipset boards are more expensive, but better suitable for 8 core chips and overclocking, also 990FX chipset boards have a better support for dual gpu setups. 990FX chipset supports both sli and crossfire at 16x gen2 speeds.

970 boards are basicly also totaly fine for overclocking, especialy with a FX6300, But also with a FX 8 core basicly.
But the 970 chipset is not realy that suitable for dual gpu setups.

Oh, the reason i was looking for the older chipset was because i thought it had a better chance of not getting rejected by the os like a comment mentioned above

i dont think that would be realy a big issue.
if you just uninstall all the drivers from you motherboard, before you switching them out,
it should be okay in most cases.

after the board switch you will only need to install the drivers from the new motherboard.
And if you have a OEM windows license, you might get an issue with the activation.
But you can eventualy allways activate by phone, and just tell MS your previous mobo died.

Thx again, i was stressed out by that a lot

And if you do get a windows crash during booting up?
Then you can allways do a fresh clean re-install, which will never realy hurt once in a while anyways.

Since you have 8.1 you can take the drive out of your machine and completely switch humans.

I had been using a drive between a dell desktop and a lenovo laptop and had a perfectly good experience.
