[Solved] Best GPU ($230) for my pc?

Hey teks,

I'm building a PC and I kinda know what I want. But I'm really struggeling about which GPU to take (Limit is $230). Does someone knows a great GPU for my pc? And yes, I'm going to overclock

My pc stats:

CPU: AMD Black Edtion 3.8Ghz FX-6200

MOBO: MSI 970A-G46

PSU: Corsair CX600 V2

RAM: Corsair vengeance 8GB

Please help me!

The contest cards in those price ranges are the GTX660 and the HD7870, they both battle for that range in price and depending on what games you want to play will depend on which card you get. Here is a bench of a bunch of games at various resolutions of both cards for comparison: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/548?vs=660

The GTX660 has the price lead so far at $200 for the cheapest one vs $215 for the HD7870, take a look at the bench and judge which plays the games you like at the best fps you like. The cards trade blows with each other well, in some games the HD7870 pulls a bit, in others the GTX660 pulls a bit as well, you can not go wrong with either card honestly.

If your max is 230 i'd personally buy a 660, the performance between the two cards is similar, you get physx, CUDA, better drivers. Downsides being the small memory bus width on the 660 will limit your OC potential, and eyefinity being unavailable to you.

But in youe position i'd scrounge together an extra $30 and buy a 7870ghz MSI HAWK for $260.

But what if I do this:

GPU: HD7960 Boost

CPU: AMD Black Edtion FX-4100 3.6Ghz 4 core

RAM: Kingston ValueRAM 8GB

MOBO: ASrock 970 extreme3

Will this work? I mean like it will not bottleneck because of my CPU? This does fit in my price range, And the HD7950 is a pretty good card. Or are there better cards for 280 dollars?

Yes it would work and bottlenecking it is possible  with the fx4100, can you include the prices you are paying for it? We can help you find a better processor close to it's range for you.

The HD7950 is a direct competitor to the GTX660Ti, it is the same case with the 7870 vs 660. On some games the 7950 pulls and on others the 660ti pulls: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/550?vs=647

The GTX660Ti has the price lead at $245 mark while the 7950 starts at $275, so the GTX660ti to me offers a bit of a better deal at the moment only because the 7950 is a bit to high. Do not be fooled, either of these cards will do serious gaming damage, ultimately it is a matter of preference and use.

CPU: AMD Black Edtion FX-4100 3.6Ghz 4 core = $92

GPU: HD7950 Boost = $280

I'm going to take a look at the 660, but can you help me to find a better CPU? If there is a risk of bottlenecking I don't want to risk it.

Eh? 7960? Did you mean 7950?

Also, don't get Bulldozer. Get Piledriver. FX-4300 or 6300

Yeah, I ment HD7950 :D. But the FX4300 and FX6300 are 25 bucks more expensive. Isn't there an other Good CPU for around100?.

Oc'd 7950's are at or above GTX 670 performance, and some of the better Custom GTX 660ti's can get near there as well, theyre really is no wrong choice here, what games wil you be playing ?

Can you check the price of a Phenom II 965BE?

Here is a link to a fx4100 agaisn't a bunch of others, it seems the Phenom II series is faster then the FX4100 by a good bit :http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/amd_fx_8150_8120_6100_and_4100_performance_review,6.html

Also please check the price for a FX4300 as well.

I'll be playing graphical heavy games. Like: Battlefield 3, Crysis 3, Dayz, Arma III but also be playing like Total War, Call of Duty, F1 2012. The less graphical games. So you could say I have a really big variety, but I'll be playing the more graphical heavy games the most,

Phenom II 965BE = $85

FX4300 = $115

The Phenom is cheaper but delivers a better performance than the FX4100. :/

The specs of the Phenom are: 3.4Ghz, AM3,quad core .

is this the same as yours?

I would shoot for the 965BE minimum, if you can stretch your budget a bit to the FX4300 please do as it gives a little bit more performance, here is a bench of both: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/102?vs=700

It is anywhere from 6-10fps difference between the 965 and the fx4300, it really is up to your budget.

Hmmm. The 965 is a good alternative. But it's getting pretty old.

Can you use pcpartpicker or post the prices? Maybe we can cut down on some stuff

And if I go with the AMD Black Edition FX6100, 3.8Ghz, 6 core? for $105? or is it just the same story as the FX4100?

Ehh sure... Wait a moment. Here it is: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/tqjT

Oh yeah guyz I'm dutch so the prices are not all the same as in America or where you might live :D

Dutch! How is the weather over there?

Since finding FX6100 benches is a pain in the behind, it does perform better then the FX4100 and the 965BE by a little. Here is a 8150 8 core from the same series agaisn't the 965BE : http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/434?vs=102

The 8 core is anywhere from 3fps-7fps better then the 965BE quad core, that speaks volumes for the bulldozer CPU's. If you really can not manage the FX4300 then get the 965BE you will not be dissapointed, i would never recomend getting a fx4100 or fx6100 or even the fx8150.

The system you listed really is a well rounded system, it will do very well for sure.

If you don't already have it, ditch the cooler and use the money for a 4300 or 6300

Well I looked at the price of the FX-8150 and almost got a heartattack :D. That thing is $165 compared to the 965BE ($86) The 965BE really does an astonishing job. And when I compare the 965BE with the FX-4300, it's almost 40 euro's cheaper. So it will be 965BE that has the honour to go inside my computer :D.

So this is the final conclusion:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965BE (3.4Ghz, Quad Core)

GPU: Geforce GTX660Ti

MOBO: Asrock 970 extreme3

PSU: Corsair CX500 V2

RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8GB

One last question: Am I able to overclock the GTX660ti and the Phenom? I have the Cooler Maser Hyper 212 evo included in the list.
