I was looking at the ThinkStation P620 on the US site for a friend, and came across this after I had configured it. On the sidebar, where it shows the configuration, many of the components are marked as “(soldered)”. However after adding to the cart, that note is gone from the final list.
See the memory, onboard M.2, and even the M.2s on the Quad AIC! I commented about this on the latest 5000 TR Pro video, and I got a “This is not true” from someone at L1. Don’t know what to make of this
I’ve purchased three P620’s so far with the 3945wx, and can confirm no components were soldered, other than what’s supposed to be.
What I didn’t check to see, is if the fuses were burned on the CPU, marrying it to the system board. Although it doesn’t matter in my case, these machines won’t get upgraded, or parted out when retired.
They are vendorlocked I think. I avoided buying a used 3945WX for that reason and bought a p620. I think we had someone in the fourm a week or so ago buy a 3995WX from a OEM Lenovo and wouldnt boot due to it being on a non Lenovo board what sucks.
Retail Threadripper Pro gets vendor locked as well when installed in the Lenovo P620. You won’t be able to use the retail 5975WX in a different motherboard after it has been installed in the P620.
