Interesting but were people that oblivious to that fact. I mean any free work for a for-profit agent that the outcome is not free non-permissive software is exploitation, that you anyway do for the few potential privileges these events can give you. Are most people naive towards this fact?

There is also big difference depending on who organized the event and under what terms is the software agreed to be produced. It can be done really fair and it indeed can be done in a way that resembles the fashion industry exploitation.

I agree it depends on the organization.
The most alarming but not surprising part of the article for me was:
