So question about a ECC and board compatibility

  1. Support for ECC Un-buffered DIMM 1Rx8/2Rx8 memory modules (operate in non-ECC mode)

in layman terms does this mean that one could hypothetically put in ECC unbuffered dims and You will not crash your system, however they will not be running as Error Correcting Code memory? or is it more nuanced than that?

It just acts as non-ECC memory. Will post and run, but no ECC. And specs for ECC is usually worse than other memory and with higher costs, so no reason to use it this way other than buying cheap 2nd hand ECC memory.
