So it's finally time to upgrade again

So as the title says the time to upgrade has finally come again, now,I have  about 500 EUR to upgrade my current setup and the upgrade will go into the GPUs. I currently have a Gigabyte 7870 and I wanted to add another one and a corsair h100i,but for 3 days now I can't decide if I should spend a little more and just jump up to a 7970( 280x ) crossfire setup. It's driving me crazy,It's mostly because of the 3gb vram not only the performance, games are more and more demanding and it just seems that when I turn AA on and get a high res screen the 2gb vram on the 7870 is just not enough. What's your take on it? Should I just get a 7870 or jump to a 7970 crossfire setup. It temps me like hell since I can just sell my 7870 and add 100 more eur to buy a 280x and then use the rest of the money to buy the second 280x. I'm not sure if it's worth it,what would you do? And yes,I will crossfire, won't go for a single GPU. I want to be done with it,If I buy the 780 TI I just god damn know I won't be happy until I get a second one..

well if you feel comfortable with a CF setup, and you know all the pro´s and con´s then i think a R9-280X is the way to go for your setup.

Offcourse a beast R9-290 CF would, epic, but thats gonne be to expensive. lol ☺

im personaly not a big fan of dual gpu setups, offcourse if you play the games, that are good optimized for it, then sure its great. But there are also alot of games, that are not working that great with it, and those gonne be a pain in the ass. also you need a decent powerfull enough psu to power it. which also cost money if you dont have one.

I have a 800w one around here. But yeah I do see your point,My current 650w one will explode with my OC'd 8 core and two 7970's. I guess this is the way to go,as for the 290 ,yeah, that's somewhat out of my budget and I'd have to jump up in price even more because I'd need a new PSU as well. I'm also fine with the crossfire setup,I actually love having 2 GPUs,I play games that scale really well like BF3 online and for the rest of the games that don't really need all that extra horsepower like League Of legends I can always turn it off

yes then you could go with a 280X CF. or 7970 if you could find those for cheaper.

Personally , I think you should step to the next tier cards. I base that mostly on the way games are gonna become more demanding. ( Thinking about Star Citizen ). I love to crossfire or sli but its a sometimes you win sometimes you lose thing. So for a more trouble free exp. get the strongest card you can afford. I am planning on upgrading to 780s myself.

Blah If I buy a 780TI I'll end up broke in a year since I'll want to add another one . I'll just go for a dual 7970/280x setup. The gpus are strong as hell I don't really think there's a game out there where two 7970's can't handle at full detail, well maybe crysis.. That's the point I want to futureproof the system as much as I can. But I want to be done with it at the same time so I'll just grab two 7970

I think a pair of 780s will lay waste to your idea. Its just not worth the money to listen to loud and hot graphics cards at the high end.

A GTX 780 is ~500Eur in my country, two of them will mean 1k eur,I'll be spending about 650 Eur for two 280x from gigabyte,I know how the windforce cooler works and it's dead silent until you hit 80% fan speed, which I'm 100% sure I'll never do,I don't plan on OCing them as I'm limited by my psu and I want them to last a long time, plus I don't think I need any more performance. Two gtx 780's would be great but they're out of my budget. I have about 500 Eur to spend, plus selling my card for 150 Eur will get me the exact amount of money I need for two 280x .

Understand that. I would still purchase the strongest you can afford. Then get the second on the cheap as prices drop from say the next gen release of cards. I am starting to see the amd card prices trend back to sane price levels. Which in theory may also impact nvidia prices again. A little patience and close watching of the market may snag you something beasty. :)

Yeah I see your point but damn I can't help myself,I Can't wait to see two 280x in my system. I'll wait a month till the next paycheck, maybe something will happen.

This why i am tracking the 780 for sli. 290 prices are not to bad either. but still alittle higher than i would pay for them.

well a factory overclocked 280X is not that much slower then a GTX780, on stock.

like the Sapphire toxic.

But its all depending on where you located, in alot of country´s outside the US Nvidia cards are still alot more expensive then AMD. as i see in Australia and the Netherlands for example

Good point. I do forget about that being american all.

Yeah AMD is still cheaper than Nvidia in EU,I live here and a 290x is ~200eur cheaper than a 780TI. I decided to follow your advice,I'll just get another 7870 for ~150 Eur and save the rest of the money + what I'll save until I decide to buy two strong gpus,I kinda got scared when I saw that games already need 3gb vram, god dammit it's impossible to keep up. I'll just keep my 7870 CF for a year or two then get two strong 6gb cards or god knows what 12gb vram cards we'll get in 2 years.

Not exactly what i meant. I would get the strongest card of your choice now. You always pay more than you care to for the first card. I look at it like this i have two 7870s that can cf to 780 level( under ideal conditions ) so now now i have my standard of upgrade for the next set. So my next purchase should be at least that performance level or higher. Make the strongest purchase you can now then grab the second on the cheap. You are going to need that 3 vram quicker than you think and the 7870s cf may not be that great soon. (Thinking about star citizen ) I am sure someone will correct me if i am too far off base.

Well 150eur  for a second 7870 is nothing for me,just a performance bump so I can deal with games for a year two,and then I'll get the best gpu released. God dammit I hope they bump up the vram to 8gb already,I'm sick of constantly having to upgrade every 6months. I don't need to max out every game,I just want to play at 60fps with decent settings. Even if the two 7870's won't handle in the future I'll just turn AA off and mix the settings a little, shouldn't be so bad. If I get a 3gb vram now I know I'm going to slap myself in a year..Might as well just play the waiting game

As a matter of fact I just replaced my Gigabyte 7870 OC (Windforce 3x) with a R9 290. If you want a second 7870 and feel comfortable wit buying a used one you could have mine ;-) (depends on where you live, of course)

I kinda found a 270x already but thanks :P
