So I partition my HD and I installed ubuntu alongside windows

it was working fine a few times until one day I choose ubuntu in the windows boot loader and I only have a single blinking cursor on the prompt and no response... any ideas because it took forever to get my drivers and everything working and I don't want to install again if I don't need to.. thanks

Wait, you choose Ubuntu in Windows boot loader? Please explain.

How were you even able to get into the Windows boot loader?

I partitioned my ssd and installed Ubuntu on one part and Win8.1 on the other... Then I used EasyBCD to config the bootloader easily... it worked for a few days then outta nowhere it stopped n I only get a blinking horizontal cursor in the top left corner.... no clue what to do now since..well i said it above

I explained to dude below

anyone?

Linux will discover windows on it's own reinstall windows first THEN linux
Easybcd sucks in my experience

Hey, it sounds like you need to reinstall GRUB2,
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows

I'll explain further;

The first 512kb or so of a hard drive is called the MBR, Master Boot Record,are reserved for what is called the BootLoader that starts your OS. Whenever you install an OS it will usually replace your bootloader, the bootloader can auto-detect available OSs and boot into them.

So if you install windows then a linux os, it will install GRUB as the boot loader because that is the standard boot loader accross linux distributions, if you install a linux distro then windows it will over write grub with the windows boot loader, so in that case you'll want to reinstall GRUB2, I don't know anyone who actually wants to use easyBCD or any microsoft bootloader.

As always back up what ever files you can that you really need.
