So, Fallout 4: Game of the Year Edition

I’m one of those guys who always waits for GotYs/Complete versions of all Bethesda games. I just hate buying DLC… I’m finally going to be playing Fallout 4 on September 26th.

Anyway. Most of you know now what my stance is on Bethesda’s so-called “role-playing”. For more negative characters, anyway. I’ve already heard a lot about how Fallout 4 is quite bad in this department, but is there anything else i should know before diving in? And i’m not really thinking maybe someone will dissuade me from getting the game, or try to. I just want to know what to expect so i don’t disappoint myself horribly. Because i do hear it’s quite disappointing.

I mean its just a bethesda game. Get an Xbox One from a fanboy for 50 bucks and get fallout 4 for 13 bucks at walmart. Nothing will be different I promise.

This is very sad. I found Fallout 4 to be quite enjoyable, and still do. Anyways, I highly recommend modding, though not right away. Explore the waste, let yourself feel the fear of rad storms, and the Glowing Sea, etc. Once you’ve gone and experienced the mechanics, True Storms is the mod to get.

Be careful if unlocking high framerates, the game engine starts breaking down if the graphics run too fast.

In spite of the limited story options I found it well worth a single playthrough. I would have returned for a later look if it wasn’t for the game engine. Bethesda just don’t do the technical stuff very well.

In terms of roleplaying it’s apparently crap. Or are people wrong? I always have a good guy and an evil female Chinese character in the Fallout world. The core gameplay in Beth games is always great. Exploration is awesome and i hear this is no different. Can’t wait to see the new environments. And i’m for sure getting CBBE for Fallout 4. Just a quick question, can i use Mod Organizer like i’ve been using for the past year and a half?

mmmmmm…

@mkk

WOW?! Still, after all this time? That same bug was in all Gamebryo games and even Skyrim. Omfg… Bethesda really are bad at the technical stuff. If only everyone had the mathematical precision of Kojima Productions, the guys who make Resident Evil, iD Software, etc. Optimizations. Damn, they make a world of difference. They seriously need to hire new people. It makes a day and night difference. The hardware you can run MGSV on is ridiculous. And those Resident Evil games. Holy shit.

Well, i have a very nice 960 that surprised me with its performance. And still does. But again, those optimizations.

I think people are wrong in that they like to jump up Bethesda’s butt. Frankly, what passes for RPGs these days sometimes amazes me. I had someone assert that Batman Arkham Asylum was an RPG because you apparently had stats and could level up those stats as you saw fit.

Are they wrong about being able to play an evil character? Yeah, I could see that I guess. But Bethesda’s hardly the first studio to be bad at letting you play an evil character. Hell, Origin (not the content distribution platform, but “We Create Worlds” Origin) put out a wildly popular series of honest to goodness RPGs where you were good or you didn’t beat the games (Ultima, for anyone playing along at home).

For anyone looking to play an evil character in an actual RPG game, Bethesda put out a wonderful RPG a while back called Daggerfall. It’s being remastered in Unity.

I use the Nexus mod manager myself.

IT’S CRAP… RUN…
Seriously though… I am not a big RPG fan myself, but F4 is one of the first games I have refunded. It is really bad as far as gameplay goes. They have gone with the default “Bioware style conversation options”. And they are the worst at it. I liked Skyrim’s conversations, because they did not break the flow of the game. Now they do…
Also, SPOILER WARNING:
You kill Deathclaw in the first hour of gameplay if it don’t bug out… Mine bugged out and I shot it with whatever I had as weaponry without it even acknowledging my existance. Also you do that in a power armor, that used to be a big deal, and now it is just another thing…
The game is crap…

Minor spoiler
It’s not an easy kill unless you’re on the easiest difficulty

I think it’s a good foundation, it just needs time for the modding community to fix everything and make it extremely well polished.

The story was disappointing. About as good as Fallout 3 maybe, but nowhere near as fun as Fallout NV.

Addendum: I have not finished and hardly played most of the DLC. Saving that for 3 or 4 years down the road when the modding scene has had a good amount of time to mature and age like a fine wine

They made something called creators club that they are making their own paid content for in order to make the season pass buyers still have to pay more for dlc.

Note worthy I am quite disappointed the modders never managed any penis mods on par with schlongs of skyrim. All the dicks you can add to the game are ultra unrealistic. I want to loot the raiders body and have that thing just flop out like it should but no.
A question is also should super mutants have a huge dong or a tiny little wee burred under all the bulk. A hard question to answer, maybe this is why they never worked on it. Anyways I’m kinda getting off topic here.

edit: Maybe some super mutants could have a shriveled little thing wile others with a big swingin pipe, maybe the alphas.

The console experience in fallout since FO3 has been poor at best. Low FPS, long load times and microstutter… a cheap PC is heaps better in terms of enjoyment… and you already have a PC, so it’ll cost less to just get it on steam. Besides, even with all the “paid mods” controversy, the free mods community is still one of the largest and most active, so having some extra horsepower to unleash crazy EMB, textures and hilariously broken amounts of enemies or phycis is well worth it… plus you could get involved and make your own!

Don’t get me wrong, in my head FO4 is not as good of a game as if they had just updated the graphics on New Vegas and fixed some bugs, and the world lacks the creativity and awe inspiring beauty of morrowind’s world and skybox (even in low res and jaggy), but its a massive step up from most shooter RPG’s on the market, from mass effect Andromeda (if not talking about the main story, fallout4’s story being near its weakest part, followed by radient quests, even if some guild quests and the hand scripted encounters are gold). But if they hadn’t released skyrim, it’d be my least favorite of Bethesda’s 3d RPG.

Hopefully the GOTY version is well priced, if not I’d advise just getting the base game whenever its on any sort of special… season pass be damed, you’ll get your 50hrs worth on the base game without paying double to add 10 more (aside from nukeworld, which takes a long time, but its not even a better experance than some mod based dungions). That aside if you do love the game, having the DLC will greatly increase your mod compatibility, I made the mistake of living with my old CD version of morrowind too long when it was blocking mods I actually wanted.

That’s… really disappointing. WOW. First HOUR? I think i nicknamed Deathclaws “brutalizers” for a fucking reason. What do you fight it with? A starting handgun or something? So you use Power Armor that early? WOW. Talk about not knowing what it is to reward players.

And to those who actually enjoyed/played the game:

I mean, i’m still excited to finally play it. How large is the game world? And which mods should i install from the get-go. CBBE is the first that comes to mind. The character creator basically allows you to fully sculpt the fact, CBBE style. Except CBBE is the entire body. That’s just the best. So much fun.

Anything else?

I thought the game was incredibly boring. The story is uninteresting without a lot of choice. There aren’t many ways to level up your character beyond turning yourself into some superhuman beast. I got to the glowing sea & lost any interest to continue.

Most fun I got out of it was finding out that god mode gives infinite materials so I just built a clubhouse on top of Red Rocket.

its true it is pretty much a mindless go there and do this kinda game and even on hard mode you wont die much unless you really need to git guud, the settlement system is not my bag but some people have fun building there little shanty towns.

Oh dear…
Hard mode improves your loot drop quality. The game is not that difficult anyways, the hard mode just makes it easier with all legendary drops…
Look, I still would say go back to XP and play Fallout 3, because on W7 F3 is crap… And Bwthesda have chosen not to fix that, but to remaster Skyrim…

As with your elite Dangerous thread, if you’re going to be persuaded by randos on a forum, I’m not sure if you’re again pissing away any enjoyment you might have just because person X said they didn’t like it. Now on to my opinion.

I think it’s a good game. But like Bioshoch Infinite [in which I seem to be the only person on the internet who thought that was god awful] it’s a departure from the other games. By departure I mean it’s less of an RPG and more of a Shooter with occasional branching story elements and lots of exploration. @psycho_666’s analysis is very misleading because the event they describe happens is due to you using a piece of SPECIALISED EQUIPMENT, which you then have some doing ahead of you in order to use it later.

The Positives :
The gunplay is much better than the other games, it feels very satisfying to use your guns and score criticals on the baddies. You have a grenade key out of the box, so grenades are actually useful now. You can still get lost in exploring the world, which is something that endears me to no end about the series. The aesthetic is still recognisable, and you’ll still remember you’re playing a Fallout game. If you’re not picky about the tasks the game gives you, there’s a lot to do in the game that has nothing to do with the main story line. Weapon customisation is out the wazoo, so you can modify your guns however you like. Power Armor feels a hundred times better to use in this game, rather than just being a set of metal trousers you slap on like in the previous games. Contrary to people’s beliefs, there are plenty of different paths to choose if you’re paying attention. The DLC is different enough to warrant a look, and adds a good chunk of time onto the product.

The Negatives:
like previous Bethsoft games, there are many rough edges that they clearly are used to the modding scene fixing for them. As mentioned, it’s primarily a SHOOTER, so you WILL be doing the storyline, it will be mostly the same, and it’s not ultra compelling. The voiced protagonist means you aren’t building your own character so much as dressing up their mannequin however you like, the cosmetics of which have zero affect on the gameplay. Unless modded, the dialogue wheel is extremely vague on what exactly is going to come out of your character’s face before you choose it, leading to you saying something different than you would’ve chosen. The gun customisation, while extensive, leaves you with only a handful of basic archetypes which you then slap mods on to change into what you want, ie slapping a stock on a laser pistol changes it into a laser rifle. The stats, important for weapon handling in previous games, aren’t used that way any more, leaving you unable to do “builds” as such. Likewise, the use of them in dialogue options is severely reduced. Crafting requires you to loot junk items, which cause an almost constant weight crisis if you like to have one of most weapons on you for special cases. The factions you can interact with aren’t as extensive as New Vegas, leaving you unsure why you’re mincing squads of people you’d like to join up with if they’d let you.

Overall, I enjoy the game. If you’re on PC, I strongly recommend checking out the Nexus mod site, and install some quality of life mods [weightless junk and throwables, etc] first, before getting frustrated.

To be clear they give you a mid game weapon but only limited ammo for the encounter, and power armor works very differently to previous games… its now a suit OVER the rest of your armor (although interestingly it overrides the stats not adds to them, but its basically always better unless your abusing end game items and effects) that consumes fuel (called fusion cores) which is pretty rare to find early game. Also power armor is far from all equal now, the rust bucket you get for fighting the death claw is FAR worse than even a midteir set you’ll get from somebody like the brotherhood of steel (by joining them or killing members depending on your choices), and incomparable with a full X-01 set you’ll have at the end of the game. Also if you don’t play the encounter with he death claw very well or smart the power armor you get will be pretty beat up (its not even 100% when you get it), so this really is not an overpowered thing…

Also strongly consider abandoning the settlement system altogether if you don’t want to play a minuteman build. The game seems to be on rails towards that at the start, but if you just ignore it and go about your business leaving the one first Preston Garvey radiant quest undone, and sanctuary to fend for itself in default trim then you end up with a play experience much more like the older fallout games. Don’t get me wrong, settlement builds can be fun, but they can also be the most frustrating things about the game, so give it a try without.

Thanks for the clarifications!

And don’t worry, as soon as i heard about the GotY edition i wanted the game. It’s Fallout. I’ve played the hell out of FO3 and NV. E:D really does look like a boring, monotonous game, though. I’m not letting people persuade me out of playing it. This is strictly what i can expect, and what i can be excited for. And to prepare me so i’m not as disappointed about the disappointments when discovering them myself. But anyway, yeah, I did ask which mods people recommend i get. Because Day 1, i want to enhance the game as much as i can. Does it really NEED graphics mods? Perhaps just textures and enhanced effects? Most of all though, if the world has some great places to see, then that will make me happy.

@SheepInACart

I take it it’s the usual “WARNING: Your territory is under attack!” type of scenario which can be annoying in regards to settlements? If that’s the case, yeah… I dont wanna be on a quest halfway across the map and have a message telling me my settlement is being raided by… err, raiders.

I am just pissed off at the story. Who’s idea was it to have your character in an RPG start married with a kid (you can’t even change the kid’s name/gender), and then have it be fully voice acted, and every time you talk to someone there is a third person camera facing your character to further break immersion. So you have broken any role playing aspect right there. Fallout 4 is not an RPG. Actually it is closer to a JRPG (not actually RPG imo) with shooting mechanics than anything else.
My big African looking dude sounds like a generic white voice actor for the whole game and he whines the whole time. Garbage.
You play in first person and are immersed in the world, then anytime you talk to someone you have an out-of-body experience. Trash.
Forced to have a very specific backstory ruining any other playthrough, as all the characters would have the exact same story and role. Shit

I just have to say thank god for mods. But I really wish I didn’t support this trash game. Bethesda has lost it. Game design is dead if this is supposed to be an RPG.

You see, this worries me. Because Bethesda always borrow from the Elder Scrolls and Fallout. I don’t wanna talk to NPCs like that in TES6.

Anyway. How’s the game world? Any snowy environments?

Literally just an engine and you buy the parts of the game from the creators club.
