So BSD... What version do I use?

You really don’t need to use ports for the most part with freebsd.

Packages do exist for most stuff in ports…

If you do use ports, running make general does detection of what hardware you’re on if i recall. its been a while.

Dammit, this actually got my Distro-hopping Bug itching yet again.

TrueOS (formerly PC-BSD) in the 12 years it’s been around always was the most complete desktop operating system around of all the other BSD’s in my opinion. Never took time to give it an install to bare metal however… That may change. I was always torn between VectorLinux (Slackware based) and TrueOS. Obviously I chose VectorLinux years ago for awhile.

Whatever you end up doing make a post about it. Video if you can but at least document your endeavors…
