Alright, I'm really not sure where to post this, but I'll try here first, I suppose. I'm looking for a little PC to put linux on and screw around with it on. I'm not totally opposed to building a new one if the price is dramatically lower, but I'm looking for something near the size of a NUC. My original plan is to get a mid-higher end NUC and throw linux on it, does this sound like a good idea? Anybody have any other suggestions? Thanks in advance. [Note this box is just going to be for funsies. I'm not doing any heavy gaming, just something that can run, say, minecraft fairly well.]
I was going to suggest something like a raspberry pi, but I'm not sure how well it would run the full version of Minecraft. I know that there is a RPi version of Minecraft, but its a stripped down version. You would be able to run retro games on it though.
Budget? id go AM1 AMD, for the price, nothing beats it. somthing like this http://pcpartpicker.com/p/gMktBm
A raspberry pi won't run minecraft even half decently that's for sure. Idk if the game have matured more, but it use to be fairly tasking on the cpu. I don't know if this is because, java, incompetence, or just advanced computation, but I'm pretty sure it can't run minecraft above 10 fps.
It'll probably run Doom and alike though.
If you want to build your own NUC, try looking around for a nano or pico itx board.
System76.com Meerkat is a NUC with Ubuntu on it. Or you could go with an ASUS eeebox.
Intel Compute Stick Pre-installed with Linux $110
probably useless for gameing on but great cheap way to playaround with linux

MintBox
The Mini version, designed for and pre installed with Linux Mint
or the slightly bigger version
dual lan too : )
it may be a tad too pricey, but its different to any other self build case, and it works. its also passive and can fit beside the tv
Let's call the budget $500-600ish. I can go over a little.
That Mintbox 2 looks really cool, that might be a reason for me to hop onto Mint instead of Ubuntu.
That build looks like a pretty good starting point for what I want, it's just bigger than I'd like, but if I can get something drastically better than an SoC NUC in my budget, I'd be willing to compromise on the size.
I checked out the Compute Sticks first, they're a little less powerful than I was hoping for.
That Meerkat looks pretty nice, a bit pricey though.
really? $499 for 4GB RAM, 32GB SSD, 5th Gen Core I3, Wireless AC and Bluetooth 4.0?
Raspbain has 'Minecraft: Pi Edition' which is a cut down version of Minecraft more commonly known as 'pocket edition'.
I know, this was stated in the first post 12 hours ago by @Meekoman25.
Obliviously I was talking about the full version, I also think that's what @Go_Fish had in mind, but I guess he'd have to elaborate on that.
You could go for something like the one I'm sitting at, a mITX MB in a HD-PLEX H1.S It can most definitely play minecraft at 60fps
I wouldn't go for a CPU with higher TDP than 45 though.
There are also other producers of fanless mITX cases, like streacom
Whoops, guess I hadn't realized how much I had kitted it out. Yeah, when you go more baseline with its specs, it looks really reasonable.
I was talking about the full edition. The server I play on runs various modpacks, so it'd need to be able to handle that, which is why I'm thinking some higherish end integrated graphics and 8GB of RAM. That little build looks pretty nice, what all is in it?
I don''t know, just some image of the case I googled.
My specs are
MB: GA-F2A88XN-WIFI
APU: A10 5700
SSD: Samsung EVO 120GB
RAM: G.Skill sniper 2x4GB 1600 MHz
But if I where to build another one of these again I'd go with a A10-6700T as it's TDP is only 45. Well ether that or go intel I guess, their HD Graphics can probably handle MC as well. The guy making the case says that it supports a 65 TDP CPU, but mine is over heating at heavy load for long periods of time, then again, I might not have secured the base copper plate securely enough to the APU.
Ah, I'll keep that in mind then, thanks for the suggestion.
