I have been interested about the prospect of building my own router with PFSense.
I wonder would you have any recommendation for a hardware to use in this? I am seeing some cheap used NUC boxes for sale such as this
Would a NUC like this work?
I will need a wifi hotspot. I wonder is there anything special on configuring this as a wifi hotspot or perhaps need I configure my existing router as a Wifi bridge essentially. Should be not so difficult maybe.
Amazon.com has several little pfsense boxes. they all seem to refer to AES-NI instructions, i don’t see AES-NI in your listing (however i can’t read kanji). I’ve been meaning to look into this as well as my TPLink Archer C7 running DD-WRT can be flakey at times
I was thinking along the lines of turning it into a capable, multi ssid vlan supporting accesspoint by using openwrt on it. If you don’t already have hardware openwrt can support, a Ubiquiti unifi “ac lite” or better yet “hd nano” is a solid no-nonsense wifi access point…(they don’t come with a configuration ui running on them, but the “controller” software for them is easy to run on pfsense… or in the cloud on a vm, or on a raspberry pi, or on a laptop once in a while)
WiFi looks fishy on the nanopi (all non ath10k wifi looks fishy to me), but at least the allwinner H3 it’s using has a cryptoengine core, that’s supposed to do 90MB/s of 1KB aes-128-cbc. How well would that translate into OpenVPN, I wonder.
