Slight problems with my first attempt at OC

So after the announcements about the new consoles were made i decided to make the leap into PC gaming. so i got myself a rig, among other things it has a i5 4670k processor and a Z87-GD86 Mobo, 8GB RAM and a GTX 770 graphics card.

Anyway.

Everything has been just swell. i got it together, no errors ( had it checked by a friend who knows a little more about this stuff than i do ).

recently i tried to overclock for the first time, things did not go well. A friend of mine found a 4670k overclock "sweet spot" video on youtube that he wanted me to try.

(The video is linked here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNTQ3ZanvbA )

he changes around on a couple of settings. first thing i noticed was that i couldnt alter my cpu clock ratio, among other things.

so i shrugged it off and proceeded to attempt OC for the first time (using the onboard OC, not manual)

it ends up crashing at the "starting windows" screen. over and over. once it just BSOD'ed instead.

Being completely new to this i reach out to you guys, in hope that i might be able to OC one day.

Please respond!

What heatsink do you have and do you have it properly installed? I myself had problems with overclocking i5 2500k because of the stock heatsink and bad thermal paste.

Try reseting the BIOS by taking out the battery in the motherboard and wait a minute and placing it back in. That should reset the overclock and any changes you friend made. I would also like to know what your CPU cooler is? You can not just use the stock cooler for overclocking on any CPU as they get really hot and crash.

I guess it's possible for him to be suing the stock heat sink, but with a 770 and 4670K I don't think so.

OP do you remember what setting you adjusted and to what? If you set your cpu to 6.8MHz then you'll deinately have a problem lol. When the comp boots up have you tried to get into the bios or is it crashing even before then? Try spamming the del and f2 key right after you turn comp on so you can get into bios. If you get in set everything back to auto and take it slower, watch some videos.

I ran with a Zalman CNPS12X. it runs idle at about 30 C. and at 100% at about 70 C.

i did not make any setting changes to the OC settings before attempting to use OC genie, so i'm quite stumped really.

Where would this battery be located?

oh yeah, everything is at auto, and the clock speed seems to be locked at 3.2 mHz or something... so i can't really figure out what seems to be happening. the fan doesn't really spike at boot / crash with OC either.

as stated below. Zalman CNPS12X and arctic silver (some make) thermal paste. temps below.

wasn't a bad thermal paste as far as benchmarks i viewed showed either.

I dont know alot about intel but if you have a 'K' version doesnt that mean everything should be unlocked? Maybe the wrong cpu was in the box or if they installed the cpu maybe they screwed you and gave you a cheaper one.

Sometimes overclocking is quick and easy like the videos but sometimes it takes all day.

both the box and the CPU itself said what i stated above, so chances are slim. did a LINPAK benchmark test which didn't uncover any abysmal CPU speeds either. so probably not the case.

UPDATE:

i've tinkered with core temps and multipliers.

the only stable thing i've gotten to work is 1.24 volts with 42 multiplier.

this seems like a load of shit in comparison to most, if not all other videos i've seen OCing this particular CPU.

what might be the issue? which BIOS settings should i run over?

should have gotten a decent Asus board, also what psu do you have, those affect overclockability

mmm. not completely sure. i'll check by tomorrow. it's a tad late to be tinkering now. for now, all i can really say is that it's a corsair, and that it's modular.

i'll get the exact model tomorrow!

also what do you have you're memory set to?

memory set? as in dram clock speed or something?

yeah, haswell doesn't like ram to be too high for some reason or not its kinda vague

Start out at stock, bump up the multiplier one notch at a time, booting into windows and running prime 95 for about 5 minutes each time. Do this until windows wont boot, then up the voltage by one notch. Keep doing this until your tempratures become too high, or it doesnt boot. When that happens, lower the multiplier and voltage by 1 step, and boot into windows. Run prime 95 for a few hours to check for stability.

i don't get some of this jargon. give me a second.. at tock?

the only stable OC i've gotten is high on voltage. can i increase the cpu votlage beyond 1.25 volts with a haswell? at 100% with intelburntest it runs high 70s and just hits 80.

anything beneath 1.24 volts won't boot when multiplier is set to 42

That should be stock.

got a response from a consumer that had the same problem, he needed to update from BIOS 1.2 to BIOS 1.3 seeing as my card probably has 1.2 i'll try that. if problem persist ,i'll get back to you guys!

updated bios, still horrid overclocking voltages.
