Skyrim Crashing to Desktop

Hi guys, getting some crashes in Skyrim where the game will just crash to the desktop. I have a tonne of mods, something absurd like 250+. Only recently it has been crashing to the desktop, mainly when I approach a new city / large area. I have the skyrim 4gb patch, SSME, latest version of SKSE. I have used TES5Edit to find broken / conflicting mods have tried LOOT but that broke my game last time.

Any help or comments would be appreciated. Thanks

What mods did you install right before it died?

Also it may just be to many. Once it hits that 4 gig cap... rip.

I can only speak from my own experience, my 2 cents:

You need to use some load order tool like LOOT, it is really not optional when you have a lot of mods. You also need to read the description of every mod (also not optional) and figure out what it could conflict with. Then add one mod at at time and find out where in your load order it belongs. LOOT doesn't have rules for every mod out there, it is just not possible. Read the latest LOOT thread over at Nexus for hints, LOOT will give you a link to that. You will probably need to make custom rules in LOOT for the mods that are not covered by the master lists and needs to be in a specific order according to other mods. I had to do that recently with Combat Evolved, as LOOT put it in the wrong spot. Don't worry though, it is not hard to do, just needs to be done.

Yeah, it can be a lot of work to make it work. Badly done mods will probably never work, I have had to drop several as they just wouldn't play well with other mods and the author was gone/uninterested. Only option is to fix them myself.

And many mods need compatibility patches to work with other mods. For example, I use the Audio Overhaul for Skyrim 2, and that has several patches for my other mods, for example Guard Dialog Overhaul. They both modify sounds in Skyrim, so they need to play nice with each other. Sometimes the author of the mod provides patches, sometimes you need to look for them as others have made them. Updating mods can be a chore due to this, is there a patch for my other mods? Etc etc. When I update Static Mesh Improvement mod, there is a long list of stuff I need to be careful about, which mod overwrites which etc etc.

Mod Organizer can make it easier to test mods, as you can use profiles etc. The STEP wiki has an introduction to Mod Organizer, and also a lot about modding in general. Gopher has done a series of videos on Mod Organizer.

I've been using Nexus Mod Manager for a long time, but have been contemplating a switch to Mod Organizer. Seems like a better tool for the job. Won't be trivial to move all my stuff to it an have my saves still work though.

Ah, a link to Gophers excellent videos of course. They are very good and Gopher has a sane way to approach modding. Recommended :-)

Thanks guys, I made a pretty stupid mistake when installing mods, I kinda went on a mod downloading spree and got about 20 of them at the same time and it crashed after launch, not sure if you can filter mods in NMM by date. I was also thinking of switch to Mod Organiser.

I think I have found the problem, I'm using more than the 3.1gb memory limit that skyrim has, so I am going to try installing ENBoost as seen in one of Gophers videos.

That helped me out A LOT. Enboost is great if you have the Vram. I just installed it the other day and it has made my gliches and crashes disappear really.

I used NMM for a short time and then jumped over to MO. MO makes it easy. But to back up what you said LOOT, TES5EDIT and Wrye bash are essential IMO.

Cleaning your mods doing merge patches and bash patches is a little tedious but well worth it in the long run and quite easy once you get the hang of it.
