The CS383 is now available in the USA for $379… no idea whether that includes tax though.
Fingers crossed it’ll reach European shores soon.

Anyone know the warranty duration for this case? Only thing mentioned anywhere on their website is 30days for the psu in the manual but it doesn’t include a psu
nice!
It doesn’t, the good states of the USA don’t even charge taxes on purchases.
The “30 days” mentioned in the warranty section of the CS383’s manual isn’t saying that the warranty duration is 30 days but rather that if the product in question is a PSU, and it is faulty within the first 30 days after purchase. It should be sent back to the retailer but if it’s more than 30 days after the date of purchase, it should me RMA’d to SilverstoneTek themselves.
On SilverstoneTek’s warranty page, it says the following-
North America
All SilverStone retail products have from the date of purchase, a minimum of 1 year limited warranty.
Select products have longer warranties (please refer to the product list above on this page).Europe
All SilverStone retail products have from the date of purchase, a minimum of 2 year limited warranty. For FQ series fans and retail PSUs, the minimum warranty period is 3 years (select products listed below have 5 year warranty)
The product list that the quotes refer to, is a list of PSU and AIO water coolers but no cases. There are also several other relevant quotes for other areas of the world which, like the Europe section but not the North America section, have their own smaller lists below. After quickly scanning through them though, said lists only contain PSUs, AIOs, and fans. No cases. It’s also worth noting that with the exception of Europe’s 2 year minimum, all territories (including North America) have a 1 year minimum warranty.
So the answer to your question is, if you’re in Europe, the CS383 should have a minimum of a 2 year warranty. If you’re anywhere else in the world, it should have a minimum of a 1 year warranty. It is possible that the warranty may be longer though.
I just saw this new Rosewill Thor Case, it looks very similar
170$ for all 5.25" bays and 270$ for the one with 8 hotswap bays
Thank you for bringing the case to my attention. It is nice to see another modern case with plenty of 5.25"* bays but I also think that the standard Thor NAS, and to a lesser extent, the Thor NAS Pro are cheaper for good reason.
First of all I’ll get my personal, subjective thoughts out of the way. A modern, commercially available case with lots of 5.25" bays is a rarity but there are a few out there. The reason I’ve been so excited by the CS383 though, is that unlike those handful of other unicorns out there. The CS383 is aesthetically appealing. Other cases, including the new Thor, look either really boring and plain, or they are tacky and very gamer-ish, with convoluted, dust trap front bezels, and odd lumps and bumps. I think the root cause of this is two fold. First of all to bring down the cost of manufacture, and second, with cases like the Thor where functionality is the main selling point, I don’t think aesthetics are a significant consideration for most of the target audience… they’re cases that are sold because of what they can do rather than how they look.
I will say though that the Rosewill does have a certain, early albeit unrefined Lian Li feel to it, which is a good thing in my book… it just looks cheap to me. That’s not really a criticism though considering it is pretty damn cheap as similar cases go… or at least it appears to be.
You know that “*” I put in my first paragraph? Well, here’s why…
If you buy the regular Thor NAS case, then you get 11x bays at the front but the Rosewill website doesn’t actually mention “5.25”. It just refers to them as being 11x 3.5". They’re clearly larger than 3.5" but I do wonder whether they’re full fat 5.25" bays, and more to the point, how much the (what appears to be) large, folded metal guide tabs for the 5.25" to 3.5" sleds will limit compatibility with 5.25" bay adaptors… why would you want 5.25" bay adaptors I hear you ask?
In it’s stock configuration, the Thor NAS has no direct cooling for any of the front bays!.. Nor does it appear to have any way of mounting fans to the front or the rear of the bays… that’s just dumb in my book. So you’ll either have to spin your drives down, run them hot, or buy after-market 5.25" adaptors / cages. Which would also mean that having one more 5.25" would have been a significant plus to some users. As it would have allowed 4x 3x5.25" bay adaptors, which if not for the guide tabs, would have meant as many as 20x 3.5" disks.
The Thor NAS Pro model comes with what looks like 2x 3x 5.25" to 4x 3.5" hot swap bays, that each have what appear to be a 120mm cooling fan. Assuming that they are indeed standard 5.25" bays, then this is one area where Rosewill scores a big win over SilverstoneTek for me. The product page, which is rather basic, also mentions-
8 hot-swap 3.5” SATA/SAS bays + 4 dedicated 2.5” SSD slots for hybrid storage
I can’t see where the 4 2.5" SSD slots are and whether they’re instead of 4 of the 3.5" slots or whether it’s 4 slots in addition to the 8x 3.5" slots. If it’s the latter, then it’s another significant win over the CS383 but if it’s the former, then it is a little odd that only 4 of the 8 3.5" can be used with 2.5" drives. I think in this area, I’d have to very marginally give it to the CS383. It’s a big plus for me, that the Thor NAS comes with so many 5.25" as stock, where as the CS383 will need modding. But the CS383’s 8x 3.5" hotswap bays can also all be used for 2.5" disks. It’s not a big win for the CS383 but it is still a win.
It’s worth reiterating that the Thor NAS Pro still has 5 free 5.25", where as the CS383 only has 4. And the Thor NAS Pro’s 5.25" bays are in a single contiguous block, where as the CS383 has a single bay at the top, and 3 bays at the bottom… non of which have compatibility limiting, metal guide tabs. So a slight win for the Rosewill assuming the guide tabs won’t be an issue with your hardware. Again though, I think it’s a close run thing.
The other potentially significant advantage for the CS383, is that it’ll have just over 20mm more clearance for long GPUs. According to a reddit user who owns the Thor NAS Pro and a 317.8mm long Zotac 3090. They had to replace the stock 3x 5.25" cage fans with 15mm slim fans, in order for their 3090 to fit. It left them with about 3mm of clearance between the slim fan and the GPU. Which means the Thor NAS Pro has about a 310mm clearance for GPUs. Where as the CS383 has a 340mm clearance with it’s stock, 25mm thick fans in place. In other words, GPU clearance won’t be an issue if you have a Founders Addition 5090 but if your card is longer than 310mm, that probably rules out the Thor NAS Pro… which, I might add, lacks a stock GPU support.
I think it’s a lot of trade-offs between the two cases. Unless there’s certain features of the CS383 that are significant to you, then the Thor NAS Pro, which should be around $100 cheaper at $270, is worth considering. But I also think the standard Thor NAS is probably a false economy in regards to almost certainly needing to add cooling for the front bays. Not just in terms of the cost of fans but also how you’d mount them, and how much those metal guide tabs would limit compatibility with after-market 5.25" cages.
Cs383 seems to have a sas backplane too while the rosewill case doesn’t seem to.
The Cs383 is using standard 7-pin sata data connectors for it’s hotswap bays just like the rosewill; so no fancy SAS backplane features like expanders, 24 gigabit or dual path on either.
I think the last thing that the Silverstone has over the Rosewill is availability. There’s plenty of cool cases but I simply cannot buy them in Australia without 2x the price because of shipping. Like I’m already talking to my local retailer about buying the CS383 day one. No waiting and no headache.
From the Silverstone website-
backplane: 8-port SAS 12Gbit/s / SATA 6Gbit/s [1]
…
[1] Mini-SAS HD (SFF8643) to SATA 7 pin cable and 12 Gbit/s SAS HD card required for 12 Gbit/s performance (i.e. SilverStone CPS05 & ECS05)
First of all, I can relate to some extent in regards to the costs of shipping. It sucks when certain things just simply are not available from the same continent. There’s a lot of rare films I’ve had to order from the USA because that’s the only place they’re sold, and the shipping is often more than the film itself… Sometimes I’ve had to setup postage forwarders too, because international shipping wasn’t available.
Oh, and Just in case you missed it, here’s a comment I made a few weeks back, about the case reaching Australian shores and at least one retailers website.
The mention of miniSAS HD is in relation to the ECS05 expansion card they are assuming that you will buy, not the connection of the hdd hotswap bays.
here’s the connectors on the bay as seen in the manual:
Yep I was pretty chuffed to see that Scorptec would have it day one. Silverstone availability is usually good and that’s what got me excited, but it wasn’t a guarantee.
For context, Scorptec is one of Australia’s two biggest tech retailers alongside Centrecom (no listing yet). So it’s not some small batch that have been shipped in. Availability should be good
Ah, I get ya. I misinterpreted your previous comment.
ok I didn’t realize that. Having a “cheap” tower with a sas backplane would be nice to have for the plebs without racks. anything that has a built in backplane seems expensive to be in a tower format (I was considering even old 4U servers that can be turned on the side, but they seem rare to find.
You know what would be neat? If we could all look at ourselves in the bathroom mirror tonight, and repeat the phrase “Is the Silverstone CS383 a case for true professionals?” three times. Then, just maybe, some higher power might just give us an answer in the next few days…
Or if you don’t want to wait, you could check out the L1T Patreon.
